Hi
I would really appreciate some advice on administering antibiotics (Trimediazine powder) to a two year old filly. The vet has prescribed a course of two sachets a day for ten days. On the box it says not to feed for more than seven consecutive days. Do I follow the vets prescription or the advice on the box? Or do I contact the vet and query his advice? And thereby question his authority?

Any advice or experience on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ten days is quite a long course, I usually get five days at a time, but I'm sure your vet has a reason! They prescribe trim about 20 times a day so it seems unlikely to be a mistake in something so simple.

If you're worried give him a tinkle and double check though. He won't mind. He'll probably be glad you read the box!

I would follow your vet's advice - the dose rate for Trimediazine is quite wide, and extended courses are not unusual. Skin infections, for example, will often require a minimum 2 week course. Drug manufacturers often put some strange recommendations on their products - the recommended doses of sedatives, for example, are massively more than is typically necessary.
However, ringing and asking your vet shouldn't be a problem. Better to double check but this doesn't seem like an unreasonable dosage or length of course.
