Had the vet out to my gelding tonight, who is suffering with his sugar intolerance at the moment, all the spots are coming out while he's detoxing and causing him to itch like crazy. So much so that he's itched his nose and taken some of the skin off. My vet has given him some antihistamines called Piriton (is this the same as the human sort?) to help curb his itching and has reccomended that he be on them for the next month, having four a day. However, the vet told me that you can get large tubs of piriton over the internet (cheaper than I'd get them from him). I've had a look and I can't seem to find what he's talking about. Does anyone know where I can buy them??

Thanks in advance!!

Have you tried under the generic name of chlorpheniramine?
I work in pharmacy so give out the human form a lot (they are the type which can make humans drowsy...not sure of the effect with horses!) You can buy them over the counter at the chemist in packs of about 30 (I think) and they cost about £3 ish...how does that compare to vets??

Thanks I will give that a try as it is cheaper than the ones the vet's prescribed. According to the vet last night though you can buy a tub of 500 piriton for about £12, which I found surprising as when I buy them for my hayfever 7 tablets cost me £4!! So if its true that they are that price for 500 i'll be buying them for me as well!!!

I have had them in that quantity and used for both a horse and a dog (vet prescribed in both cases) I have no idea where they came from but will see if the tub has anything on it to help.

ps you don't need a prescription - they emailed me to ask what they were fro and I replied for personal use (hay fever). Came in about 3 days if I remember....
