Some fascinating stuff on this website + blog - and also some bits and spurs that make one feel sorry for the equines they were used on.

This 1890s riding simulator looks most efficacious !

That's really interesting thanks!
In the 70s I used to have a weekend job at a RS and the boss was ex army. He had a private tack room full of old army and polo tack, some of it I'd only seen in books. The only things we actually used were the sidesaddles , that was fun. I wasn't a fan of jumping sidesaddle though :)

The first page I found featured this sidesaddle stirrup, after reading the thread about stirrups. Yes, can't imagine jumping sidesaddle is easy! Only tried SS once at Pony Club camp and felt fairly secure, but strangely high above the horse.

They had one of those machines on the Titanic.

A friend of mine used to have a Museum of the Master Saddler, with some fascinating stuff in it, but he's closed down now. It was a great place to browse round.

Oh, Robert's place, has he closed? That's a pity. I've had, or made, all sorts of historical horsey stuff over the years, mostly Medieval or Baroque, and once you've also adjusted your riding and training (and type of horses) it all does work.

Thanks for posting. The riding simulator looks like a job for the Repair Shop TV program. I will try and visit the museum in Tuxford if ever I'm in the area.

I find the history of horse care and stable management really interesting. I have a passion for old books and have started a bit of a collection since my husband found an old veterinary dictionary in a skip a few years ago.

I thought of "The Repair Shop" today after misreading a film title as "The Lady Varnishes" ! I really need some of those double spectacles :)

I love collections of miscellaneous curiosities too; places like the Pitt Rivers Museum. I'd be happy if all museums were still like that, touchscreen/VR stuff never seems as fascinating.
