My dog is getting himself in such a state about the fireworks (that are going off every single bloody night) that I've had to order him some anti-anxiety pills from the vet.
Has anyone used them before? And have they helped?

Yep, I use ACP for my greyhound every year for fireworks night, and I personally think its great. The first year we had her she tried to escape through a glass door because we didn't realise how scared she was (she's a rescue dog) and I never want to see the consequences of that again

She is around 20kg and I give her one 10mg tablet which just about calms her enough - one year the vets gave me the wrong tablets and she had one 25mg tablet, she slept like the dead which was horrible - but I would much rather give her the ACP than see her shaking, panting and distressed all evening. Hope that helps!

Thanks, my little dog is a rescue too and hates any loud noises.
My vet was going to give me ACP but then changed his mind to something else that is apparently actually for anxiety rather than a sedative.
I'm glad it works for your dog, gives me a little hope!!

Ah right, not sure what that will be then but hopefully it will work if the vet thinks it is the right thing! I get into a right miserable old bag at this time of the year with the kids letting off fireworks in the village because my poor little greyhound always ends up climbing the walls if I can't sedate her first

Hope things work out for your little dog, will keep my fingers crossed for you

How does that affect them? The first year we had her (when we had taken her to the vets to be stitched up) he gave her valium - that was awful, she staggered around everywhere and couldn't stand up! I find with the ACP it just makes her go to sleep quite gently?

I can't remember what they said they were called, but i think they work similar to Diazapam. I'm picking them up tmrw morning, so I'll take him to my mum and dad's tonight as it's quieter where they live.

lol.....it is vallium

I find it much more effective than ACP......mine just drift off the sleep after a little wobbling around

Its great for my whippet....it calms her fantastically

i dont like ACP for fireworks - it just dopes them, but they're still scared and probably more so because they cant escape. I think Diazepam is a much better option for most dogs.

Well I shall let you know the name of what my vet is giving me.... it begin's with an 'N' but for the life of me I can't remember the rest!!

This is one thing I don't miss about England. We only have July 4th to contend with, but I'm lucky in that Stella doesn't even flinch at the sound of fireworks or thunder.
