If you're not going far it can be worth lunging before you go somewhere just to get the loosening up out of the way, then you only need to fine tune when you get there. Stick to the passing rules that are laid down by BD, and ask the steward to remind anyone who is mowing down people indiscriminately. I find it can be worth going for a mooch down a lane if possible, but it isn't always. I don't know if you've come across Sally Swift - she has written some very good books on visualisation techniques and so on. One of hers is "soft eyes", basicly you don't focus on a fixed point, rather your eyes float, it gives you much better periferal (sp) vision and I find it also stops me getting tense in my shoudlers. Also try not to stress about not being able to do your ideal warm-up, it will just make things worse!

mm..... interesting will defo try that one. I'm staying over nite as i have long journey and my class is first off, so i'm hoping that i'll be one either first or second on so therefore empty warm up

It was just a little annoying cos my boy is a small TBX 15hh1 and can get very tense with large 17hh plus WB bashing out the paces and of course no steward. That happens alot around my way for BD, don't get me wrong we still did ok ..... came home with a 1st rossette

.I just know that it going to a big atmosphere for my boy and if chill will do fab test if not the saying 'I'll get my coat' springs to mind

But like red ribbon

But may try green ribbon if busy or sharpening elbow?????????????

I didn't find a green ribbon much use - don't think people take it seriously enough.

If they think there is a real chance you may actually dent their uber-warmblood they do stay out of the way a bit better (at least it stops them powering up behind you, which I actually think is worse than cutting you up in front).

Had a similar problem on Sunday with a would-be trainer teaching his harem of middle aged housewives in the middle of the 20 x 40 warm up arena leaving very little room to get round him and his pupil.

Biggest laugh was when he got on one of the horses in his trainers and tried to work it for her looking down at his hands the entire time pitching poor horse into its forhand and causing mayhem among other competitors trying to keep out of his way.

I run unaffiliated dressage comps and we put notices up to keep them out of the arena but there were no notices and no stewards. I was tempted to tell him to get out but my first BD comp so not sure of ettiquette (sp).

Really annoying - I got a first and second so didnt affect me too much but really annoying. His housewives bombed too.

i ahd the same problem the other week. IMO people on foot shouldnt be allowed in the warm-up. I tend to head straight for them

as I dont agree with it. They get in the way and expect everyone else to cram into a small space so they can give a lesson. Its bad enough guessing where other people are going without watching for people on foot.
Another thing I hate is people not competing working their horses. In the right circumstances I dont mind such as when the warm up is quiet if they have a young horse but when they are a livery just exercising their horse its just rude!

yeah i saw congrats!!!!!!
I just got pee...d off with one lady (use this losely) she was so far up her own ar*e, aarhhhhh... that's why i went down the lane as i normally school down country lanes
I was just wondering if anybody has any tricks up there sleeve to stop be dived bombed by big bu**ers. I like red ribbon - will use if busy but i'm not sure that some people will see has they have a job looking pass their gg's ears!!!
Well defo no-one allowed in warm-up unless on gg, i think you'll allowed trainer (outside warm-up) but not full grown teach'in session defo no no

My girl was used for showing before I got her and it did take a while for her to get used to the activity of a warm up arena. Its worse when on the left rein because I have found myself sandwiched between a thundering WB in canter coming towards us and the fence. She tries her best to get away from them and I have been slammed into the fence before. I have found the only way is to ride slightly in off the track so that I have some space to move into if they get too close.

I did try the red ribbon by the way and no-one took a blind bit of notice. This horse doesnt kick but my old one did and it still didnt make any difference.

yeah see that one, i just would of like to do some circles and spirlling (sp) in & out, but i just think i'm just going to have to be a big more hard nosed about it
