well,my mare wont lift up her back foot or leg 4 me to pick out nor will she let the farrier pick it up . now, shes not lame and she runs around the field kicking and playing, so no probs, however this just started after she had her foal, as b4 she always had a full set of shoes on , now she only has a set of fronts on , due to she wont lift up her back leg/foot , i had a chiropractor 2 see her and she just said shes stiff from having the foal and maybe pulled a muscle ... strange ... any thoughts

Can she walk backwards? Is she sound on a tight circle?
How long is it since she ahd the foal? Surely if its not long then she shouldnthave hinds on anyway, if any shoes at all.
I ahve a horse that always comes in from a break the same. He has an old muscle injury on his butt, 2 physio sessions and he is 100% again.
I would expect any good physio to be able to note and sort a problem like this. I wouldnt be having the chliropractor again, 'maybes' are no good to anyone.

How long has she been without shoes behind? If not long then she may not be used to the feeling yet and so not feel stable enough to lift up a back hoof for it to be picked out.

Will she not lift either hind foot?

Oh, probably not sore from lack of shoes then!

I would agree that prehaps you should get an equine physio or sports massage therapist to look at her, especially if it has been going on for a whole year. It may just be she needs more schooling or specific exercises to help her balance better and make her back end stronger.

Collapsed heals- possibly, this would make her sore and reluctant to put all weight on other leg whilst lifting foot up (so reluctant to lift up foot). If you can get her to lift foot up long enough for farrier to look then he can tell you.

Not sure sedating will help as this will make it harder for her to balance if she is sore. Does she react violently to being asked to lift foot?

I would ask vet to recommend a good physio to have a look. I have recently had a physio pick up a serious problem with my horse that the vet completely missed.
