So I've seen arabs and warmbloods and I was wondering...

Are there any appendix owners on here? what are your thoughts about them and what do you do with yours?

Yup they are lovely :D Eats like a quarter horse and has the energy and looks of a thoroughbred (at least mine does). The perfect cross!

Wow I can't believe many of you have never met a Quarter Horse!! If you come over here probably half of all horses you see are quarter horses or qh crosses! They are just great all around horses. Nice temperment, go english or western, can jump, do dressage, work cows, basically anything you want.

Box-of-frogs -"Apart from the obvious bit of useless intestine or additional papers in a file, what on earth is an Appendix?"

An appendix is a thoroughbred cross, so an Appendix quarter horse is a thoroughbred x quarter horse. An appendix arabian is a thoroughbred x arabian.

Stroppy- Yeah, there is a wide range of looks and personality. I think it depends on which breed shows up more  But generally they are great.

TarrSteps- My appendix qh is a registered quarter horse. So when we go to quarter horse shows we definitly stand out...:D

And for all you who have never met a quarter horse- FIND ONE!!!

There are quite a few Quarter Horses over here, AQHA UK is the place to look.

My mare is a QH, born and bred in the UK. I don't think they will ever become too popular here as they are seen as not tall enough. 16.2 seems to be what most folk want, even if they can't get on them, without a ladder.

I rode an Appy x QH last year, and marvellous fun he was too.

They don't seem all that popular a breed where I ride (an hour north of NYC), possibly because this is the epicentre of H/J land. The Hunter classes seem to be dominated by WBs and TBs, and most of the trail horses in these parts are draught crosses.

Always wondered why AQH compete in their own Hunter classes--would such a horse be marked down in a regular A-circuit Hunter class (apologies---I'm a transplanted Brit more accustomed to Connies, Fells and TBs than I am American breeds and the way they're sometimes segregated for shows)?

I have one! (although I've always just referred to her as a QHxTB, never knew there was an actual term to describe the cross!).

She's a grouchy madam, but I wouldn't swap her for anything.

It's pretty different! The idea is basically the same and horses can make the switch but it's worth a search to see some of the AQHA hunter classes! There are lots of QHs doing regular hunters, though - they just rarely do both. Also AQHA show are a law unto themselves and offer a spectacular range of classes - most of the people I know who show AQHA seriously don't show anything else but they may do a range of classes at those shows.

OP I'm surprised your horse stands out, particularly if you do HUS classes. I worked for a AQHA barn for a few years (they'd bred and produced a Superhorse so not exactly in the basement) and they had horses in their program that were as much as 7/8 TB!! Some of the HUS horses were closing in on 17hh, although they were about 6" wide. :D The All Around horses were a bit more traditionally shaped and they also had WP and stock types but they really did run the gamut.

The "Appendix" thing makes me laugh. Basically, if a horse has AQHA papers you can breed it to a TB and get Appendix papers for the foal. That foal can now show in AQHA classes without penalty. If it gets 10 points (not all that hard, some horses have more than a hundred points) then it can get full AQHA papers. Then you can breed it back to a TB . . .

It's actually a really interesting world. The AQHA is HUGE and controls the whole scene in a way anyone in any other discipline (except maybe Arab showing) wouldn't believe. Some lovely horses, some not - there are literally millions of them.

I think it just because for most disciplines here (sj,dressage, eventing) people look for a horse built more 'uphill', which is perhaps why they are not used as much. But from what ive read they have good temperaments and make nice alround horses.

Do you have many competing in high level dressage/jumping in the US?

I have a registered Appendix horse - he is eventing and doing Pony Club. Lovely horse with a nice attitude to life.

We dont do western so unlikely to ever get 10 points.

I am also breeding my QH stallion to another TB mare this year so may have another Appendix 2012.
