I would love to hear from any Australian forum members, as i will hopefully be moving over to Perth later this year. I have lived in Australia before for just over a year but didnt have very much contact with horsey people whilst i was out there.

From what i did see solid tying was common place, and what looked like straw was called hay? I did go to a horse sales in mundijong and saw the most gorgeous Buckskin coloured horses but sadly no heavies :(

My OH had horses when he was younger over in QLD he recalls horses going for $50 at the sales in times of drought :eek:

I have loads of questions to ask about all manner of things !!

I live in the colony ;) On the east coast not the west so may not be of the most help. but feel free to fire off questions.

Horses still do go cheap during the drought but $50 has become $500 (basically meat money). There are lots of heavies - well Clydie crosses - around. If you want to get an idea of what is for sale check out horsedeals.com.au and search WA.

In terms of riding and competitions etc I believe there is less choice in WA becasue it is pretty much isolated from the rest of the country by a massive desert and the population is quite small.

Hay quality etc will depend on the time of year, location and amount of recent rain. The hay that looked like straw was I'm guessing oaten hay which the horses quite like (but so do the rats). Lucerne hay is the most expensive and come in varying qualities and costs the most but there is generally a slection of medow & clover hay available.
There is no haylage here (that I know of).

I moved to Adelaide 5 months ago, dont know much about perth, but feel free to ask any questions! I have only just discovered this forum and have utilised many an hour on it in the past week!

I am currently looking for the ever elusive 13.2 pony for my daughter who has just started to learn. There does not seem to be as much choice in south australia or perth, all the horses seem to be on the east coast in NSW, Victoria and QLD. I have just started riding again after 10 years off ( still sore !) :Dand helping out with a friends horses after i advertised on gumtree.

Horses do seem to be cheaper here, and hay looks like straw! Many terms are different - livery= agistment, bit confusing really!:rolleyes:

Cars are very expensive here for their age as well. Its good here but i do miss green fields, old villages, Argos and Tesco!!

I'm in WA. Distance is one of the big things to get used to; we travelled 2 hours to a fun gymkhana last weekend, and they still start early!
 
I moved with my family to Vic nearly 7 years ago. The hay has always been normal looking where we are, not straw like at all. Also everyone I know uses baling twine to tie up to.
I've only bought my first car since being here, but I'm sure my parents have said that they have found cars to be cheaper here? That's new cars though, not sure about second hand, which may be different.
 
I'm in oz at the moment, have been doing some travelling and working with horses.
I'm near ish to Perth,about 2 hours down the coast.
One of the girlsI work with reackons she drives 3/4 hours to compete quite often, but that didn't seemto be that unusual in NSW either.
Horse gear is very expensive over here, and choice is limited. Cars are also epensive, but fuel is cheaper (to be fair where isn't it!)
Perth is hot, but I really like WA, I started hear in September, flew over east, then drove back, which took me about 5 days, although I did start the journey in QLD!
Its great fun, and the people seem pretty friendly. Probably more relaxed in WA than further east.
 
Hi I am in Aus too - I know nothing about Perth, WA. So probably not much help.

Ask questions, we may be able to assist or point in the right direction. As mentioned Horse deals is the main horse buying magazine for everything, so you will get a lot of info from that, re prices and what is available.

People do travel large distances to events 1-2 hrs common, but people from our pony club will travel even 5 -6 hours for a weekend event (show/pc comp). They obviously make a weekend of it.

Im another one in Australia, in sydney at the moment though.
I used to live in Perth, but that was about 15 yrs ago ( gosh, that long ), and didn't' really ride while I was there... not really helpful am I? :)
Alot of things are the same, just called different names, but good quality tack is expensive and can be hard to get.
Hay depends where its grown, Ive bought hay transported from South Australia ( a really nice oaten/ meadow mix ) and also from Victoria ( a Ryegrass ). Alot of people in Sydney feed lucerne, you can get haylage, but I've been concerned with the quality of the bags Ive seen.
You can buy horses really cheap here, $400 - $500 at the sales, really just enough to outbid the doggers, some are really nice OTT Tbs, other breeds tend to be more pricey.

I lived in WA for 18 months or so, tried riding at a local school, but really didn't enjoy it there - I started helping out this lady a little bit, she's scottish but been in perth for 20 years or so I think. She breeds quite a variety of horses from welsh sec a's, highlands, andalusians and they seem pretty generously priced

Where are you Zaminda? Bunbury way? Thats where I was based, loved the dolphins there :)
 
Yes I am near Bunbury, about 20 mins outside, middle of nowhere really, but 50metres from beach! Sadly missed the season on swimming with dolphins, cancelled due to storm!
 
Hire a canoe and just go out in the estuary - we hired them from this guy (lives in Australind). I did this about 4 times, and saw dolphins each time bar one when it was a bit rough and we didn't make it outside the breakwater - make sure its high tide though, or you'll be dragging the canoe through the estuay :D

I run past the site of the last shark death every few days, which is rather sobering. We used to wade the horses every PM when the water was calmer, which was awesome
 
Where was the last shark death? In Bunno?

I never saw any thankfully, wouldn't have been going back in if I had :eek:
