sorry to be a numpty but arent all farriers qualified to trim horses feet weather you use shoes or not, mine allways asks if i am going to ride and trims accordingly. what different qualifications do they need???

I got a new horse last week which had shoes on. I wanted the shoes off asap so rather than wait another three weeks for my UKNHCP trimmer to come and remove the shoes the livery yards visiting farrier was due the next day. I wasn't going to be there but told YO to ask farrier to take shoes off but NOT to touch the sole or the frog. Horses that have been shod have thinner soles anyway and the newly barefoot horse needs all the sole he has to help him transition before he can grow his own thicker one plus shod horses have underdeveloped frogs and again a large frog is needed for rock crunching barefeet. I got to the yard later on and low and behold the farrier had trimmed back the frog. To be fair he hadn't touched the sole but he just couldn't resist messing around with the frog. If you find a farrier that's studied the barefoot trims then fab but otherwise try the website already shown above or this one:

Successful barefooting is also so much about having the corrrect diet and environment. Does your farrier give diet advice, such as cutting out as much sugar from the diet as possible and supplementing with mag ox amongst other things?
