My poor boy is currently confined to barracks with a hot poltice on his hock to try and draw a suspected abscess out (vets instructions before I get frowned at for polticing a joint!) it's done the trick in terms of opening up the wound (which was absolutely tiny BTW) but there doesn't seem to be a great deal coming out at the moment (day 3) hock is still massively swollen and I'm feeling sorry for my poor boy.... he's on antibiotics and bute (since monday) - swelling became massive overnight wednesday night so been polticing since thursday... spent £90 on vetwrap and Animalintex so far - arghhhh!

I am buying a hamster next time...

try kids nappies (they draw moisture and have the handy sticky tabs), and softbahn off ebay (re-use) with fleece bandage over the top
been there before!!

I did wonder about nappies but wasn't sure how to affix them to the inside of his cock etc... stable bandages a good idea though - might try that.

vet said not to turn out because of the extent of the swelling so I'm following his advice - he's not usually wrong and I trust him 100% ...I also don't think it will be a great idea as the other geldings like to play, and he's not really up to it so he'd just get beaten up. fortunately he's got a large stable - 20ft by 15 ft so he has space to move around...

Swelling seems to have come down overnight so hopefully we've turned a corner.

Can you using a hock compress thing aswell??? i don't know proper name but when my boy was kicked in hock it really helped as it kept swelling down, plus really help keeping poultcie in correct place. My vets hired them out, but later i brought one so next time when he was kicked in other hock at least i was prepared.
