Deep digital flexor tendon tear with the tarsal sheath in hind leg. A friend of mine was told today that's the issue with her dressage mare.

Outcome doesn't sound very positive, they're considering operating although said it's unlikely she'll compete again.

Are they just being cautious?

Thanks

I'd be investigating how it happened. Was it an injury or wear and tear over time. If the latter, then the management of the horse needs to be investigated in order to decide if recovery to work is possible. If an injury, it should have a good chance with the right care and a LOT of rest and rehab.

My horse had a huge hole in his inferior hind check ligament. I was told it was a rare injury.

He has been on box rest since last August and has started hand walking this week. The last scan showed a 1mm tear left. It is hoped he will hack in his retirement.

The box rest, care and rehabbing have been an emotional roller coaster and it's nowhere near over.

Good luck with yours, the advice I would give is listen to the vets and don't be tempted to rush the rest period.

Thanks for your reply. Not sure exactly what caused it although she was kicked in the field on her hock about two months ago and vet originally thought slight swelling on inside of hock could be a small piece of chipped bone. She's just not been quite right since the kick so thinking injury rather than wear & tear.

The vet's concern is where in the tendon the tear is.
