Does anyone have any experience of claiming for non-life saving surgery after the event? Yesterday I had a chip removed from my boy's hock after a knock in the field. I wanted to get it done immediately as there was a risk of infection which could cause further problems in the joint, and the vet was keen to get it removed ASAP.

I am totally prepared to have to foot the bill myself, but wondered whether anyone on here had managed to claim retrospectively? They (I am with SEIB) have told me to send through the claim form together with the surgeon's report, so they haven't dismissed it out of hand - yet

My horse and YO's horse got into a scuffle about 18 months ago. Yo's horse fractured his hock and had to have an operation on it because of the risk of infection. He had to stay in the vets for about 3 weeks and it cost about £5k in total.

The insurance company paid out in full (she had to pay towards hospitalisation fees but that was in the policy anyway) and never questioned it.

Hope your horse recovers quickly.

Eash insurers seems to have a clause along the lines of
"Insurers must be in formed withing 14 days of any incident"
as long as you're within that time limit you should be good to go.
(14 days is an example my insurers is 60!)

Thanks P_B, the issue unfortnuately is that he had surgery without prior written consent from the insurers, which they say you must have before any non-lifesaving surgery is carried out.

Ring them and chat to them. I had to have work carried out on a bony growth under his jaw that had been shattered by a kick. it happened on a friday night - they operated on a Sat morning no one was around to discuss it with only the insurance sales staff. I rang on Monday told them what had happened and they were fine - just filled out a claim form on line with them and it went through as normal.

Petplan paid out for my boys OCD surgery no probs-but it was pre-authorised. If it was to prevent an infection in the joint then would be classed as an emergency so don't dismiss the claim yet!

E&L paid out thousands for my mares tendon sheath surgery and we only had her on trial loan at the time we didnt own her, was slightly worried as hear loads of reports they dont pay out and in this situation thought they find loads of excuses but they paid that and for hydrotherapy afterwards!!

It doesn't matter if life-saving or not if you have vets fees cover this covers for veterinary treatments for injuries etc - yu couldn't lavbe the bone chip in could you!

Ideally you should advise the insurer prior to the horse undergoing GA but, providing the vet confirms was necessary procedure then it shouldn't be an issue. GA ops are much more common these days so most insurers do not have an issue unless the horse is a higher risk for some reason (ie has underlying health probs etc)

I would advise you get your claim form and invoices in asap. SEIB are a reputable company so I can't see they will have much of a problem with it
