Any experiences of groin strain in horses?

Hi,

He autumn hunted on sat morning and unforunately went down in a soft bog, front and and back end. Bless his little heart he scrambled out and seemed none the worse, stayed out for another hour or so, mainly just quietly standing about on road sides and again seemed fine.

Turned out as normal on the sunday and monday, went for a short hack tuesday and again all fine.

However on turning out on weds am he seemed a little sluggish, not lame but not just himself. Grabbed him in at lunchtime, after work, and he walked in worse, very slowly and gingerley, couldn't even say he was lame, just very uncomfortable.

Had the farrier out this morning as first though was abscess since the ground has gone wet, but after a good examination and dig about, he couldn't find anything, other than he wasn't happy holding his near hind leg up, and advised I called the vet, who is booked for Fri am.

However one thing we both noticed is that he has a hot swelling on his near hind, on the inside of his thigh up by his groin area. He was not happy with me pushing on the muscle, stepped away and put his ears back. On the other side of his groin, no reaction at all!

So I think we may have found out why he is sore, but will obviously wait for a vet diagnosis and a plan forward.

Anyhow, to cut my rambling short, has anyone else had a horse with a similar strain? What was the treatment, and prognosis? I am assuming it will be a period or bute/rest etc as for any other strain?

Many thanks

Yes, horse must have slipped in the field and strained the gracilis muscle.

He had a few days of danolin and stayed on box rest. He was a nightmare to box rest so within 3 days he had a very small electric fenced paddock so he could see the others.

He was turned away for winter anyway and had the rest of it off regardless so plenty of time to heal. He had his usual physio and nothing was picked up.

It wasn't torn but he was noticeable lame, although weight bearing, and on inspection could see and feel the swelling. Called the vet to be on the safe side and because I couldn't tell how badly damaged the muscle was.

It was a few years ago now but I think, even with the turnout paddock instead of box rest, thr swelling was gone within a week and he was moving much better within a few days

That's great and thanks for your reply - sounds similar to my lad. He is weight bearing, not really lame but walking a bit like John Wayne (if he had hind legs!).

He can have as much time off as needed....as long as I get him right that's all that matters.

I turned him out for 2 hrs this morning as he will not tolerate 24/7 box rest either, and did seem to be moving a little more freely on coming in. He is a sensible chap so just hoping vet will allow some turnout.

Will see what tomorrow brings but the injury site is pretty obvious now that we have identified it.

Friend's horse had one two years ago from a bad slip in a gateway, had some physio and a few weeks careful rehab work and has been fine ever since.

I hope yours is as easy.

Friends horse did the same, but he completed the box rest for a couple of weeks ☺️

Sounds like ,(and I hope) a pulled muscle . however ligament damage in the groin area is very serious and takes a long time to heal . But as I said ,it does sound like a pulled muscle.

Thanks all, the vet confirmed our thoughts and the swelling has started to move down the inner thigh. 2 weeks field rest, bute twice daily and once any heat/swelling has gone, back into walk work as see how he gets on.

He is a lot happier out and very sensible in the paddock - moving normally this morning but I imagine this is much the bute as healing.

Fortuitiously we already have our vet booked for a teeth float on weds, so she can check up on his progress then.

Keeping everything crossed and thanks for your support.

Yes! My boy managed to get bogged on the moor last winter, he heaved himself out. He was a little sore for a week or 2 but came right as rain.
Thanks for that, he trotted over tonight for his tea and looked totally normal - considering he could hardly walk a few days ago, verging on miraculous!

Physio is coming to look at him tomorrow so will be guided by what she says.
