hi all,
So am i right in thinking this has just been an abcess and has burst through at the coronet band?? and shouldn't cause any issues?

probably will not get farrier until Tuesday now so anyone that has experience please feel free to share :). i have an event entered for this Saturday coming and will need to pull out on Monday if she's not going to be fit for it,
thanks in advance

I can't say what caused it as this would be best left to a farrier, but personally I wouldn't ride until it had been checked out. Is there any sign of an abcess...oozing or smelly stuff coming out?

My mare does have an abscess exit hole a bit like that, though not quite as large. It also looks as though the hoof has been damaged on something, and I didn't realize what it was until the farrier pointed it out. It's been slowly growing down and has never caused any problems whatsoever. On the inside of the hoof the white line is slightly stretched (in line with the abscess exit hole) but that is all. It's never caused her any problems and neither I nor the farrier have ever done anything to it.
ETA if you like I'll try and remember to take a photo of it tomorrow for you

nope no gunge or smell but only noticed today so don't know how long its been there

That's not like any abscess exit I've ever seen. Looks more like the horse has bashed its foot on something, or maybe got it caught up somewhere.

i have seen quite a few rupture at the coronet band and look similar but not at the side like this, cant really see how she could have caught it but i suppose could be a possibility,

thanks this doesn't seem to be causing any issues either shes not nor ever has been lame on it and its not sore for me to pull or squeeze it,

Mine ruptured there and I was allowed to ride her as she was sound and the turnout was a mud pit. We are talking walking on roads though not an event. I had the vet and it took a while to clear up - it worked best when left to the air. This is what mine looked like:

I would PM Lucy Priory on here as she will know what to do - whether it is an abscess or something else.

OK that picture didn't work - here is the link, can anyone clever make it appear on the thread and tell me what they did? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...855062.-2207520000.1367779571.&type=3&theater

It does look like an abscess exit to me (and I would venture to suggest there is a mini one about half an inch further down, so it may have been brewing for some time). That would explain the fact that it's a very big one.

I've seen one about two thirds that size, and horse was only lame when it burst, but was then sound even when a big chunk fell off the side of her hoof. She wasn't shod though, and I would imagine what you have will affect how securely the shoe is attached, so I'd be getting farrier to check it out :)

Has she had an over reach injury a few months ago? especially over the coronary band? My chap had an overreach November time and he now has a similar crack (not as bad though) in the same place half way done the hoof where it has grown out.

funny enough now that you say that she did, she caught herself just above the bulb, i think on that side i just looked through pics on phone but it was near enough a whole year ago, how long roughly does it take for a crack like that to grow out?

it was only at the back though well away from were the crack is now i wonder if its connected then!!! farrier did look at it at the time but said it shouldn't cause any issues,

maybe jus put of the event if i cant get farrier before Monday afternoon.
