Didn't know where to put this one!

Any gardeners out there?? I've gotta Squash Plant, got it at the village fete and planted it in a growbag in the greenhouse, where its flourished (i.e. taking over the blimmin place!).

Now its sprouting yellow (sort-of) globes, if you see what I mean, they're looking like a kind of Gourd growing. So my questions are:

When should I pick these "globes", i.e. how big should I let them grow? At the mo they're bigger than a grapefruit/smaller than a small football.

What should I do with them when I've picked them? Will they be sweet, or more of a vegetable? Has anyone got any recipes/ideas for cooking them? (or do you eat them raw?).

Hope someone can help!

I don't know what variety it is but this recipe works with all the squash I have had so far.
Cut the Squash in half and rub the cut surface with a little oil, season with salt and pepper possibly dried chilli flakes, wrap in foil and bake in the oven at 180 deg C for about an hour.
You can make up a packet of stuffing and fill the middle if you want to make the meal stretch further.
I put them the oven when roasting a joint.

Yummy!!! I've only had one squash so far this season. Roasted Squash is delish - cut it don't skin it and add some olive oil and S&P and roast. I'd serve it with any meat.
I do a really yummy squash and pancetta risotto - if that interests you I'll pass on recipe, it's really easy but will take me a little while to type!!!

I like to chop them in half, roast them and make up a fantastic pepper, mushroom, onion and garlic sauce/ filling to go in them. This is one of the veggie meals I feed the other half with out him noticing there is no meat!

You can also dice into cubes and roast for sunday lunch, mash them up with potatoes.

You really need to find out which squash you've got in order to establish when to harvest.

From your description it may well be a Globe squash - ususally a summer variety.

Size wise I'd say harvest now. Easiest way is to just cut one and see how it is.

You can roast it, mash it, pan fry itm make soup with it or do pumpkin pie type recipes.

If you google squash recipies you'll get loads of great ideas.
