Hi, she is having some lovely non-dusty hay at the minute, although it is very fine and falls apart very easily, it is giving her a dry cough, just a couple while riding. Any suggestions as to what you give your horses to combat this. She has it loose on the floor, all shook up and I put the hose pipe over it for a couple of minutes to drain through. It smells lovely and doesn`t seem to be dusty like the last lot that was delivered, I had to wet the other through.
any suggestions?
thanks in advance

It may still contain the spores that aggrevate a cough even tho it seems nice to you!

I'd soak it anyway, completely submerge for less than 10 seconds then pull it out so it doesnt lose too many nutrients.

If the cough persists best speak to the vet as may need ventipulmin. If you dont want to do that you can get some cough eze or something similar from feed suppliers. Its a sort of syrup that is meant to help but not sure how successful it is!

Hopefully soaking might be enough

Hi, thanks, it may be enough as it has worked in the past, but I haven`t had to soak it for a while.
I have bought some cough medicine from the chemist for a chesty cough and I will give her some after riding to see if it will clear it out.
Thanks

Whenever I get a dusty bale (I don't soak my hay) I give my boy Glycerin, Honey and Lemon cough mixture which has no active ingredients in it so you can safely feed it to your horse. I just add a good slop to his feeds morning and night and it keeps any coughing away.

You still need to treat the cause as well as the symptoms, so some medicine will help ease things but I would be soaking the hay if I were you. Unfortunately these things can quickly turn into a major respiratory problem if left un-treated. Also make sure her stable is as dust free as possible as this will help too.

Completely agree but if it's just a little dry cough from a dusty bale of hay and the horse does not usually cough and it goes away once the dusty bale is finished, I do still recommend the use of a cough mixture or if you possibly can afford to, throw the bale away ... my horse only does a little cough to clear his throat in the morning or when we begin work when he's in the middle of being fed a dusty bale of hay. He certainly doesn't have a respiratory problem according to my vet. The cough mixture works for us. Hope it helps your horse if you choose to try it.

You can get respiratory licks from feed merchants.

My boy used to have a hacking cough but he now has the lick for a couple of hours each morning and there's no more coughing. however he does get the brown lick all over his white face, so the outcome in appearance can be quite amusing
