Every year as the rape comes into flower my horse develops a dry cough, it’s not bad but he will cough now until it’s sprayed off.
So definitely allergy related. Any tried and tested supplements I could give a go? Vets coming to do other things this week so will run using Piriton past her also.

One of mine reacts to pollen and as we are surrounded by rape fields I have him on Equine America Airways Extra all year round. I also tried using rape straw bedding this winter to see if it helps him build up an immunity to it. Not sure it has worked as he is broken at the moment so not being ridden but I haven't heard him cough for a while.

Interesting. I plan on using rape straw/flax next winter due to fussy farmers not wanting wood based bedding in the muck heap! It hadn't occurred to me it might do him good/effect him! In fact this is something i forget about until it starts!
I have him on Respirator all year but wondered if there was something more allergy specific.

We had two horses who did not get on with rape so we moved yards, most grazing is on poor soil types like where we are now there is not a crop grown for miles.

I've just ordered some secreta pro max, my horse has been on naf easy breathing which has worked up until now.

Unfortunately I can’t move yards as they are kept at home. We are in a really big farming area and I’d have to go miles to get away from fields.
I’ll have a look at secreta pro. I looked at global herbs pollen x but it seems you have to start feeding it before the problem begins.
Anyone know the dosage for Piriton in horses?

You can try 'Beconase', available at chemists & give your horse a couple of squirts up each nostril. Additionally either soak or steam your hay, this will reduce dust & may offer additional help.

VERY ROUGH GUIDE!!! In the pollen season I give my 16.1hh 600Kg (approx) horse 12 piriton a day. It doesn't make him sleepy but stops the allergic cough. I buy them in bulk online (500 4mg tablets about £13).

Mine has always had rubbish airways-he is on soaked hay, damp feed, shavings bed and gets fed Naf respirator boost (liquid one) which keeps everything under control. I also use a nosenet out hacking in summer, and this year am considering getting a vet out for inhalers.

I like Respiratory formula from Equimins. Nothing else got rit of her cough completely
I used to have my mare on it year round but normally double dose in summer being rather sensitive to dust and feed etc. I don't have her on anything anymore since we moved stable blocks and she has really good ventilation but keeping fingers crossed now summer is coming. I would however put her straight back on this if she started coughing again.
