My hair is currently overdue a chop. The longest bits measure 5”. I usually have it cut every 5 weeks, I’m now heading into week 8. It’s thick and grows quite quick.

If I use OH’s clippers with a 1” guard all over, how bad will it be? At the moment, I look like a ginger Milton Jones...

I am no hairdresser but Omg surely it would be so short and just look like an out grown skin head! Mine is short I get mine cut every 6 weeks I think I might just leave mine and wear a hat lol, it might even grow long enough to have a different style who knows.

I used to have it in a no.2 all the time, but I was a lot younger and thinner and could get away with more!

I did check my trimmers first, but the biggest grade on those is only 12mm and I think that will be a bit short.

OH has said he’ll help do the back. I’m (we’re) going to clipper the sides and trim the top with scissors. Like you, Pippity, I’m currently heading into mullet territory.

6mm should be roughly the same as a #2, no?

Yep! The trouble is that the guard isn't great (I had trouble getting a consistent result using it on Blue, never mind on the back of my own head!) so I may end up having to do a number 0!

This is about the only time I wish there was someone else with me on lockdown!

If you use a clipper with a guard, say 2 inches, then your hair, if 5 inches long, will all be 2 inches long...and just be a grown out buzz cut I suppose.

I just trimmed my own hair. It's mid back length and it only came out to be a mild disaster since it is layered. But I mostly wear it in a low pony tail so you cannot tell so much and if I wear it down I can curl the ends and the unevenness is more hidden. My hairdresser may curse me and think I'm a fool but there was no way I was going to tolerate having these dead and damaged ends to pick at for the next few months/until whenever he opens and has an appointment available for me. Not the best cut, but best for my mental health I swear!

Can you order a replacement guard online? Would that solve it?

I do my husbands with horse clippers and put a #3 guard on in the winter & #2 in the summer (previously human clipper guards that fit his horse clippers which are not used on the horses!) It's very short!

A mate has used clippers to give his kids mohicans, seeing as they won't be at school for ages. If ever you wanted to experiment with hair dye now would be the time!

Ive been toying with trying a box dye for ages, I hate going to the hairdressers and it just never seems to come out like Id like but I imagine Id either end up with green hair  or have an allergic reaction, I am quite allergic :(

I wouldn't use box color for a variety reasons. You can usually get "professional grade" color and developer from beauty supply stores and/or websites. I go that route when I decide to do my hair at home.

I have in the past (and may soon again) successfully cut a fairly soft unstructured style myself by running a brand new sharp razor over it in the shower, kept a fairly light touch like blending feathers in a clip and sort of skimmed over it. It won't work for a very structured style but if you are normally a bit layered and/or wispy it will.
I also am quite happy to use a non permanent box colour, I won't bleach or do permanent but the semis are easy enough to use

I find the permanents are a lot more forgiving of blotchy application. My hair is currently home-bleached. I had a semi-permanent turquoise on, which took two boxes to get an even colour, despite my hair being pixie-cut length. I then replaced that with a permanent midnight blue, which is just starting to fade now, after a couple of months.

I've spoken to the colour specialist at my hairdresser and, according to her, if you go for a non-natural colour, even the salon-grade colours fade within a few weeks.

I probably wouldn't do all this to it if my hair was longer, but disasters grow out very quickly for me!

Mine's been dark, bleached and all sorts in between. Pretty sure there's more grey than anything else left though

Was looking at that root retouch spray in savers but I don't think the blonde will be light enough as mine is white, but then I bet everyone is going to have the same idea and there is going to be a world shortage of the stuff fairly soon

OH is possibly letting me tidy his with great apprehension I've showed him pictures of H freshly clipped as my portfolio as he seems concerned ?
I'd use my trimmers with a guard but not sure they are powerful enough and think they're a bit inconsistent if they work or not my actual clippers are a bit big ?

OMG! No way I’d be using ACTUAL horse clippers (they’ve just been sharpened and I would like to keep them that way until next season!) but trimmers I would happily use.

OH is making dinner, but hopefully we’ll be playing hairdressers after. Promise to post before and after pics.

My hairdresser sent an email round with the words:

'Please leave the colouring to us, we will work our magic once we all get through this.'

She obviously had visions of everybody buying home colouring kits on ebay and making a complete mess of it!
