I don't own a yard, but I know my YO uses NFU, not sure how much she pays, but it is a big yard, with over 30 horses. They have always been very good.

What happens if your buildings catch fire and kill the horses (God forbid), do your liveries claim from your insurance or their own?

We were told we had enough Insurance with our farm insurance for liveries. We have full liability and buildings insurance etc. However, when we quizzed about what happens and whose insurance pays out if our buildings collapse or catch fire for instance, we were told the liveries would need their own insurance for that as you can't have insurance to pay for someone else's property (said horses). However, if I crash my car into someone else's, my car insurance pays out for their damage. I was very confuddled by the comments/advice. That was the NFU

I mean, wouldn't liveries want to sue you for the loss of their horse?

We got successfully sued by a livery whos sweetitch pony drew blood whilst itching itself on the fence. The insurance told us to pay out, which we did and we then closed the yard.

It was one of the reasons why I was quite pleased my last livery left. Her horse was constantly rubbing etc on the fencing and breaking it as well as gates. Was also rubbing in the stables and drawing blood. I was worried we'd be blamed for any injuries it caused whilst rubbing.

I can't understand the seemingly limited insurance that is offered when you're taking on liveries. If your insurance can't cover you if the building collapses or catches fire and injures or kills a horse, you are left wide open to litigation aren't you?

I was aghast when they said that the liveries would need their own insurance to claim for vet fees or loss of animal in such circumstances. I bet when they made a claim, their insurers would be straight on to the yard owners for reimbursement.

Just to add, I am shocked that a livery would sue you for that!!!! Some people are beyond belief.

you would need the cover sections for those perils to be covered and these obviously come at cost which most people do not want to shell out so thats probably why it wouldnt be covered.

in order to have all the cover you require you would need the agent to come out to the premises and get his full evaluation of what covers he thinks you require and then you make your decision from there. Minimum would be Liability then you can cover buildings, produce, equipment, employees etc etc the list is practically endless!

i dont know where you are based but if you go to NFU website you can find your local office and give them a call to get the agent out and provide a quotation

good luck
