I am in need of any ideas now as my tb mare has been in the box now for 4weeks she wants to get out and i want her to get out just as much , she had a foot abscess and that is done and dusted fully drained but we are just waiting for the hole to close up . shes been on antibiotics , sprays , iodine and cotton wool etc etc the hole is closing but the vet says in the meantime to get some boots to cover the hole for her to go out in.
this is when its a pain she pulls boots and nothing seems to fit her we were told old mac boots but she has a wider than longer foot due to not seeing the farrier as she should of done in the past (i wasn't her owner then ;) ) i need something that is quite sturdy and waterproof and something that wont let mud or grit in . :s does anyone have any ideas or had a similar problem ??? thanks xx

If the abscess is gone there then after all this time it should be healed at the bottom and there should be no issue with turning her out with a hole in her foot. Plug it with cotton wool and stockholm tar if it's deep enough to hold it.

I would not personally ever turn a horse out in hoof boots, the possibility of very serious rubbing is too high.

Can I ask why she was given antibiotics? They are normally not given for a foot abscess because they can prolong it and cause nasty problems.

hi sorry don't think i explained well ,she had a hole in her foot which was quite deep ( she pulled a shoe ) which then had a abscess she was lame but is now sound . I don't particularly want to turn her out in boots as she pulls them and she doesn't really like them and yes the risk of rubbing . its all very confusing , the vet is helping much tho saying mixed things . we have been suggested to get back shoes and the farrier will seal it but our yard doesn't allow back shoes on field shoes , especially with the mares . thanks for replying , i am getting very stressed at the moment aha ! :s
