I've also posted this in New Lounge but i thought it would be useful to come in here too!
Just wondering what your opinions are of them, and what are they like as a breed? Also how much can a typical Highland carry? Any pics/breeding info of your lovely Highlands would be much appreciated!!

I moved to France from Scotland with my Cleveland Bays. Shortly after moving a friend told me she was selling her Highland Pony Gelding which I also bought. He is a very nice riding pony and bomb proof. I use him to help teach youngsters on the road.

They should stand about 14.2hh are great weight carriers. They are used by deer stalkers to carry deer of the mountain and so have to be sure footed with 15 stone plus on their backs.

They have a great turn of foot and make great show ponies. One of the male instructors at Gleneagles Eq. Centre has great success with Highlands at Dressage.

The Highland pony Society is based in Perth you will be able to get a list of breeders and for sale if you google them. Scott McGregor used to onw the Ballinton Stud very famous and with the suffix of 'Dene' He is now in Australia. Another very well known stud is Whitefield.

Thanks Supagran and Rollin, thats really useful to know. We're currently really interested in a mare who has the Ballinton prefix. Thats really good to know that they are a good stud. I mentioned in my other post in the new lounge that we're looking for a pony/small horse for my mum who has been out of riding for a number of years and wants a nice sensible family friend to hack and enjoy and accompany me with my youngsters and for me to compete lightly and hunt. Im really hoping she fits the bill when we go and try her next week!

I don't own one but I help show them for my friend who breeds them. They can be quite bolshy if handled incorrectly, but are fairly level headed and trainable.

She likes them so much she has just bought herself a 2yo colt so she doesn't have to travel her mare to stud

Zizz you are right they can be bolshy but CB's are strong characters also. I believe in nurture rather than nature. We take care not to spoil our young horses and I think it pays off.

A bold horse also makes a brave and fearless horse to hack out alone or in company and deal sensibly with the unexpected.
