To get diesel, quite a lot of, out out of a lambswool numnah, yes one of those uber expensive and beautiful Courtlea ones.

I have washed on wool wash and knackered the washing machine. Google told me to put bicarb on, that didn't seem to do anything.

Many thanks.

If anyone wants a husband, mine is looking for a new home.

Darling husband took my car to get a 5 gallon can of diesel as we have topped fields today. In the boot was the numnah on its way for a wash at home for a hunter show on Monday. Also in the boot were 2 gilets, my clippers in their box thank god, together with various socks, jumpers etc (you know the stuff you keep when you do a yard and then go straight to work). Can fell over on way to garage and leaked about a litre of diesel. The boot has a deep rubber liner so nothing seeped into carpets but all the other soft fabric items copped a dose of diesel. I binned my clothing but have to save the numnah.

The Washing machine stinks and has an oily film all over the drum and seals despite having had an empty boil wash through it.

Oops..... At least it was your husband that put the diesel can in the car without wedging it upright. :p

Can't help on the numnah I'm afraid but for the washing machine try Dr oetker (I think, or is that the yoghurt? Dr someone anyway!) Washing machine cleaner.
I had a similar problem after my OH washed his oily motorbike rags in it - hot washes and bicarb didn't touch it. A £3 sachet/bottle of washing machine cleaner did the trick :)

sunlight is amazing for getting stains out of cloths. I'm not sure if it would work on diesel, but it might evaporate over a couple of weeks out on the washing line if its warm enough?

Many thanks for advice. I have done the fairy liquid and white vinegar as I have both in the house this evening.

Husband has suggested he buys me another one. He has no idea how expensive they are. Plus I don't want to lose this one as it has sentimental value. It was an accident, I must not strangle dear husband, even though I want to !

The clear answer here is for the offending party to compensate for the loss + emotional distress...no?

I can't help with removing the diesel from the numnah, but for cleaning your washing machine afterwards - well, I've had too much practise (middle son is a bus mechanic, and we've had two batches of contaminated diesel in a year that he has had to drain from 100+ buses each time. I swear he swam in the stuff!).

A hot empty cycle using a bio washing liquid, followed by a cleaning cycle with any of the proprietary washing machine cleaners, and then wipe seals/drum and allow to dry out with the door open.

OH used to run a service station and says diesel will “eventually” evaporate. He suggested white spirit as a cleaner but I am not sure whether it would damage the natural fibres.
White spirit is ok as long as you don’t apply it directly to the numnah. It needs to go on a cloth and be rubbed over. I’d be giving it a good airing out in the sun and then try cleaning again. If all else fails maybe try a specialist cleaner. It would still be cheaper than buying another.

No help for Monday though. Sorry.

Thanks guys, you are so helpful. Just back from the class which went well minus the precious numnah. Alice didn't really miss her party numnah.

The oil is starting to lift, still stinks and the numnah remains out on the line.

I put some diesel soaked towels in my machine a while ago with some other clothes without realising and of course everything came out stinking. I think in the end I left everything on the line for a few days, did a washing machine clean on a hot cycle then rewashed it all on a long 40 cycle with regular washing tablet and a full scoop of vanish gold which seemed to do the trick

Dr Bockman has fixed the washing machine.

Soda crystal and fairy soak has improved the smell and oily residue on the numnah. I have washed that out with hot water in the sink and put the numnah back on the line. The flesh side is now a slimey mess.

Hot soapy wash. Is this red diesel with dye in it or normal white diesel? The trouble is that anything that will remove the diesel will remove oils from the fleece. A conditioner afterwards would be good. Soda crystals etc probably won't touch the diesel - you need a surfactant (which soap is) or a solvent like white spirit but the latter will be difficult to dispose of. To be honest, dry cleaning the numnah would probably give you a better result.

I am not sure a dry cleaner would take it. It isn’t a spot of diesel it’s more like a litre. White diesel, over a good bit of it.

I think AA doesn't want to tell her OH how much it cost.;)

AA doesn't have to talk about the monetary value, just the sentimental value and the inconvenience. That alone should be worth a couple of chocolate cakes, a trip to the cinema, some flowers, an evening of "put your feet up, I'll cook tonight", or whatever is is that it takes to make up for making such a mess...
