Any idea what this is?

My old cob has been turned away since March - I didn't feel he was right at the end of the hunting season, so he went out in a lovely field with his mates and stayed there!

I got him in yesterday, and clipped his feathers off. His off fore fetlock is significantly bigger than the other one, and there is a strange bump on the back of his leg, it's about the size of a small egg, and feels like a boiled egg when I poke it. He has no heat, no sensitivity and isn't lame. It sticks out about an inch probably.

Location wise, it's square on the back of his leg, above his fetlock where the suspensory ligs split off. The only suggestion I have had so far is thickening of synovial fluid after an injury, but I've never heard of that....

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it may be? It's not a bite, there's no marks on his coat.....totally flummoxed! It is almost like a localised, high up windgall, but I';ve never seen it before whatever it is!

My cob did that and it was exactly how you describe it. The synovial fluid had leaked from where it was supposed to be due to an injury and had gathered at the back of the leg.

The vet drained it and then she had a robert jones bandage on for ten days I think so that it didn't fill back up again. lSe didn't have any long terms problems.

If I was you I'd be ringing the vet on Monday. If thats what it is its simple to treat but won't go away on its own.

Thank you for the advice WS, sounds like the same thing! I'll give the vet a call on Monday and post an update.
