...runs on 3 legs
She doesnt do it in walk, or trot as i call it, only when running slowly, cantering if you like. And when she goes flat out she uses all of them
I dont really understand whats going on, if she was in pain surely she would not use the leg at all
When i move the leg around she isnt bothered, so its not hurting her. Does anyone elses dog do this, or does anyone have any idea why she might do it?

Hope this actually makes sense

My grandparents' dog does this because she had tendon problems in one of her back legs - it was fixed by surgery ages ago, but it's almost as if she got used to running on three legs so she keeps forgetting to use that one now. My grandparents shout at her when she goes three-legged because she needs to keep using that leg to prevent the problem from occuring again (either that or they just like yelling at their dog...).

But if your dog has never had any problems with her leg before, I really have no idea...

Sorry.

What sort of dog is she? Some breeds, its quite common in JRTs, suffer from slipping patella and will "carry" a hindleg . It doesn't seem to cause a problem so if your dog is not in pain I wouldn't worry.

Could also be that anal glands need expressed (assuming it's a hind leg the dog is carrying). Also, crutiate ligament might be bothersome?

Both my JR terriers carry one leg up intermittently.

One carries the same hind leg up when 'cantering', the other alternates. I know someone who paid a small fortune to have their JR's leg operated on, but my vet said it's not a big problem so just ignore it. I like my vet!

totally agree with Llewelyn, it's a real jack russell trait. If it's not a terrier then get an honest vet to have a look but if it is a terrier, turn a blind eye!
