Some of you may know Lance has been lame for a few weeks, I thought foot soreness, due to wet ground and him being prone to thrush.
Anyway Farrier came on Thurs and found no footsoreness etc, but possibly the start of a sidebone forming.

Ok so possible lamenes explained, will know more next week.

Brought Lance in yesterday and was grooming him, brushed on his back and he DIPPED away from the brush, his back was that sore. He has been off work due to being lame so its not a saddle thing, and his back has always been fine.

So did a few checks and it was very sore and tense from withers to loins basically.
I got physio to look at it who said it was tense and sore, she did some massage/exercises etc and he was much better afterwards, much more relaxed and less sore.

He was more tense on one side, possibly due to overcompensating from the lameness?

Anyway physio advised to massage every day, do certain exercises and put hot water bottle or heat pad over his back when he is in to keep it warm. She is comgn back on Tues to look at him again.

He is 18 and is very very clickly lately, he is a very good doer so only gets half a scoop of hi fi with a bit of garlic, parsley and linseed oil in.
Thinking its time to put him on a joint supplement.

Any recommendations? No more than £20-£30 a month.

Sorry for long post

Soluble superflex is very good, my ex racer used to race on sand so gets really stiff joints. My vet recommended this and must say it works fab!! not too costly either!!

My old mare was seriously stiff, and I had her on Cortavet by Equine America. It is stronger than Cortaflex and is only available from the vet. Sadly, it used to cost me about £80 a pot, which was quite frightening. She was also on 1/2 sachet of bute per day. This kept her comfortable for quite some time, until I had to do the kindest but most heartbreaking thing. Although it is v expensive, it is v good. I have also been completely amazed by the Aloe Vera products from Forever Living. I used the Aloe Gel in our pony's feed for sweet itch. I am sure there is a similar product they do for joints. I have total faith in Aloe Vera having seem the miraculous results for sweet itch. There are plenty of websites selling Forever Living products which may be worth a look.

My mare has degeneration in her fetlock joint and the vet recommended a VERY expensive joint supplement (Cant remember the name) however I tried glucosamine tablets and rubbing glucosamine gel into her joint and she had been totally sound since. I use the human tablets which are very cheap. They help restore the synovial fluid in the joint - I think?

We have had Oscar on Superflex since he tore his cruciat ligament and both we and the vet are convinced it has helped it heal as well as it has. It costs around £50 for the tub but you only need a small amount after the loading dose and should last for 3/4 months I think (sorry cant remember off the top of my head but it should say on the tub

). I know we did a lot of research into these types of products and found it to be one of the most economical and also has lots of good reviews from people I know who use it.

Hope that helps.

My ex-racer is on Newmarket Joint Supplement - £70 and lasts at least 3 months. She has been on it for 3 years since having her hocks injected. It was reocmmended to me by various sources. She has arthritis in her hocks and various other places now...she is retired now but happy and comfortable being a lady of leisure!
