Just a quick post, but the last week or so when i've schooled Gov, about 5-10 minutes into the session when I start to take up a contact he'll soften and then have a coughing fit.

He coughs about 5 or 6 times and then he's fine and works normally. There's no wheezing, his glands aren't particularly swollen and he's otherwise very well but this is happening everytime I ride (or he begins working in an outline).

Any ideas?

Murphy does the same thing, I put it down to, like Rachel has said, dusty ground - he never does it whilst out hacking, just in the school.

I asked the vet about this re my horse and he said as a general rule, if they only cough a few times when excercised and snort after coughing, its nothing to worry about.... but it can ususally be eliminated by reducing dust (and ammonia) in stable, hay, school etc...

If he starts coughing a lot or when at rest or has any snot that is not white/clear... thats when it needs to be checked out...

Mine do exactly the same. They always do it about this time of year EVERY year. I think when it gets drier and dustier. Mine have been doing it for about a month now. They just cough maybe 3 times when I do the first trot, then that's it and they dont cough at all after that or at any other time.

Mine all live out 24/7 so I dont think it has anything to do with stabling conditions etc. I thought for a while that maybe its pollen that could cause it?
