Our riding club is holding a "pink" fun show with all money going to the Breast Cancer Charity. Any tips on how to get businesses to help donate prizes, offer a small amount of sponsorship? Also do you think it's worth asking non-horsey businesses too for a bit of help? How could i promote that though? Any thoughts, ideas on how we can make as much as possible for the charity, much appreciated? Show is in South Yorkshire if any one is interested

I'd look in your local area for small businesses around that might need extra publicity for attracting immediate trade eg the toy shop (for the kids classes), pet shop for the horse and hound, feed shop, saddlers, fish and chip shop, storage facility, florist, garden centre, hairdresser. Ask them if they can sponsor a competition with a small fee to cover the cost of the rosettes and prizes eg vouchers for spending in the toy shop, hair cut, garden centre, etc so that the winners will have to visit to 'spend' in their store (and so might spend more - that's the key point) in return for mention in the schedule, on the day and that you'll be publicising in the local paper/radio too.
You could also ask other firms to eg sponsor the toilets - is there a local corner shop could supply pink loo roll and pink soap in return for a sign? Or sponsor the car park at so much per sign which you can hang on the fences - estate agents perhaps? - they'll have their own sign
I would suggest look for a feed merchant or saddlery/tack shop to sponsor the secretarys tent, and you could also ask for sponsors of individual jumps - if they have something scary to make a filler, or decorate the wings in their corporate finery, then all the better! You could also if you have the space sell a few 'trade stands' for tack shop, etc.
You could ask other local businesses if they could sponsor food and drinks, eg can you borrow a freezer and get eg a supermarket or an ice cream manufacturer to supply pink ice creams,

Basically if it's an item needed for the show, aim to get it sponsored and try to get the potential sponsor to see the benefit for sponsoring by eg if you can sponsor the prizes by giving vouchers, of course they'll have to visit the shop to spend it, or in the case of the toilets - 'it's be really good publicity as everyone uses them and will see your sign, and of course many people forget you sell loo rolls so it would be a good way of encouraging more people to use your shop rather than traipse to the supermarket in town when they run out.'
Also if you ask for material goods you do tend to get a better response than for cash (which not many of us have).
You could also approach eg an insurance or peraps an investment firm or a larger local firm for overall sponsorship of the show

Hope you get loads of ££ and sponsorship
(if you were nearer I'd love to help!)

Local feed merchant, tack shop, farmers, builders, plumber sky is the limit, so long as you name them on all in your schedule, its advertising for them too. Just draw up a standard letter and send it out to as many companies as you can, you don't get unless you ask.

Thankyou ever so much for that Dubsie, lots of food for thought there and great tips/ideas (things i would have never thought of). I shall be trying out them all . . . maybe not the ice cream one as the show is november, but hey ho

Ask the photographer and caterer to sponsor a class in return for allowing them to trade at your event. And maybe get a few stalls set up too; feed, saddlery bits and bobs, etc. They might be happy to sponsor a class if they can set up a stand.

I think as long as people have their details in the schedule, they'd be happy to sponsor a class. We (event photographer) often give a revenue share, so sponsoring a class would just be a different way of paying our way... I'd be more than happy to do this.

As part of my degree we had to do 'event management' and I was responsible for getting companies interested in sponsorship, trade stands, etc. and managed to raise lots of interest, but it was a numbers game... you have to get in touch with a lot of people to get much back... maybe mock up an email and just send it out to tonnes of companies...
Local farriers, instructors, livery yards, etc.
We got some great prizes, including a lesson on a Paso Fino, some rugs, numnahs, grooming products, a day out with a ride in a horse and cart and pub lunch, bags of carrots, etc. in the end we had so many prizes that we put on a tombola aswell.
