Hi all,

I'm having a dilemma!

My horse has been suffering with laminitis since June and I have been progressively unhappy with my vet that is treating her. I want to change to a different practice but am unsure of how to go about it. I don't want to p!ss my vet off as I need them to provide me with my horses full clinical history for my insurance company.

Has anyone else done this successfully??!!! If so, how did you go about it?!!

You phone the other vet and say you want them to come out to see your horse. Tell them you have not used them before and they will asked for details of the horse, address, name etc and who the previous vet is. THEY will then request the records for the horse, you do not have to speak to the vet in any way.

I am register with one equine specialist vet but I use a local vet for accupunture treatments and to buy wormers. they have my horse's records and both vets are happy to split the treatment.

I changed in the summer. I agree with PrincessSpark1e. i had to make the change because I was not happy. The new vets asked me if I wanted to ring the existing vets and ask for the records to be sent on or if I would like them to do it. I said please could they and all was fine. The new vets are much better for equine though I have left the dogs in the old practice as I was quite happy with that side of things.

I changed vets the day I had to make the agaonising call to have my beloved horse put down as my normal vets receptionist was so horribly rude to me, just what I needed when trying to orgainse that.

I simply rang another vets and that was that. Very easy and I'm so glad I did! Good luck

I have recently changed as well, my new vet's practice manager rang the old vet & asked for the history for both ponies, all done & I'm glad I did.

When I changed, I called my new vet practice and asked to register with them and arrange an appointment. They said they'd ring my old vet practice to get them to send my horse's notes over (especially important as she was in the middle of "having" a torn tendon!) but then asked whether I'd told my old vet that I was leaving them. I said no and they said they'd give me a couple of hours before they rang to ask for the notes... I rang my old vet and told them I was changing and they didn't care one bit! That was that!

Just thought id mention, are you claiming on your insurance for the laminitis?? If so its not as easy changing vets half way through a claim, id check with your insurance first.

If your not claiming just change! There is nothing worse than having no faith in your vet
