Any ideas on how to stop another horse from ripping my rugs?

My horse shares a field with another horse who is very sweet apart from the fact he's been nipping my horse all summer - not enough to draw blood but enough to make my horse look very scruffy and lumpy. Now that the winter is coming I just know that he is going to wreck my (mostly new) rugs as there are a few small tears in my old lightweight that I've put on occasionally recently. Apart from separating them with electric fencing, does anyone have a solution to keeping my rugs intact - I want to clip soon!

Maybe try spraying your rug with something that doesnt taste very nice? (but thats non toxic of course) I know you can get a spray for wood to discourage crib biting, but not sure if this would damage the rug or not?

I feel your pain, my horse constantly comes in with ripped rugs. Someone on here suggested a cheap lightweight turnout rug over the expensive rugs, so it gets wrecked before your nice rug. I will be trying that method this winter!

Two of our geldings do this "playing". It started off that they pulled headcollars off, then undid rugs, then took chunks out of each other. Believe it or not they are the best of friends - they just think they're stallions! We had to solve it by putting grazing muzzles on them, so they can only poke one another now!!

haha, i bet they think oh hey here comes the spoilport when ur heading to the field ;)

The products that are sold to spray on surfaces like box doors etc should be ok for rugs. I used one last year on rugs as my horse's field mate loved him so much he had to eat his rugs! Wish I could remember what the one I used was called as it seemed to work really well. It was supposed to smell horrible to equines but was odourless to humans.
