Hi
I have had my 6yr old ISH for about 5 months, I ride 5 times a week, hacking, jumping and schooling. He has 2 feeds a day of competition mix, chaff and sugar beat, 2 haylege nets a day and 3 days turnout a week.
A few months ago, me and a friend had a jumping lesson, about 45 mins in, it was our turn again to take a breather whilst my friend had her one to one over the combination, when it was our turn to take up the reins I couldnt, the only way I could describe it was that his head and neck was low and heavy, I couldnt collect him. I decided that this was his way of telling me he had had enough and called it a day and didnt think anything of it.
We venture out to local shows more or less once every weekend, doing 2 classes up to 2ft 6 max and this has never happened.
Today we hired out a XC course, he jumped everything I was asking, we were steady and controlled, had lots of short breaks, and I didnt feel as though we over done it in anyway, max jumps were about 2ft 3. Again, we stopped for a breather whilst my friend went over the jumps and as I went to take up the reins, I couldnt, same thing happend, even when I asked him to trot on, I couldnt shorten my reins to get a contact and his head and neck seemed heavy and he carried it lower than normal, so again I called it a day. We had proably been riding for just over an hour (not constant jumping or cantering).
When I loaded him onto the lorry, he had his head literally to the floor all the way home, as soon as he was in the stable he seemed back to normal.
Could this be a type of tie up syndrome or am I working him too much?
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
