I posted a week or so ago about the possibility that my horse had reacted to his flu jab - I spoke to the vets and they said it was unlikely that this would have caused it a week after so they said to keep an eye on him as he was a bit snotty and coughing a little and if he didn't improve within a few days to get him blood tested.

Well his coughing and snottiness disapeared within a couple of days, however he is still getting really hot, particularly on his neck, to the point that I am really not sure what to do now.

He is quite fluffy, although was clipped a month or so ago, and is now wearing a lightweight turnout rug and a lightweight stable rug - he has always been quite a sweaty horse when he is ridden, but never when he was rugged up - he was wearing the same rug he is now in september at night.

He isn't usually hot when I get him in, but once in his stable he seems to get clammy on his neck, and around his girth area.

He is happy and eating well, completely his normal self, however he has in the last few days started weeing a lot more - does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be caused by? I thought he may have a low grade virus, but the only way to tell will be a blood test I suppose.

Anyone experienced anything similar and have any ideas???

My mare reacted to the jab 9 yrs ago. Vet said wasnt related (!) and gave her Fynadine which caused perforated ulcer and peritonitis. She was fortunate to survive it at 12 months old. Have you taken his temp? I would have bloods done.

best to take his temperature first, if its normal its likely that he's just getting warm coming inside, i know i do when i've been outside all day! maybe just use a sheet when he first comes in then change the rug later in the evening once the temp has dropped and he has cooled down. if his temp is up then def get the vets advice againas there could be something more serious going on. seems odd that he coughed etc after the flu jab and it could be a slight reaction, unusual but not out of the question, or could be conincidental that he picked up a viral infection at a similar time.

Hi - yes I have taken his temperature and it is not high! Do you think that I should give him maybe something to boost his immune system, pink powder or something similar?

If his temperature is fine it could just be that he is getting to warm under his rugs, you can always layer lighter rugs together and take off layers when you feel he is getting too warm.
I have never given pink powder, but I do know that Redcell is a good pick me up for horses that have had a virus.

I just find it difficult to see that he is getting too warm - he couldn't be wearing much less - he is really not that woolly and is wearing a very thin rug!! It just seems weird to me, last year I didn't have this problem at all and it was only since he had the jab that this has occurred- before that he was in a thicker rug. It just seems too coincidental that this has happened since he went to the vets to have the jab!! Thanks for all help. X
