Any idea's to what Breed he is?

hi all, we've spent years and years wandering what breed Jasper is, we rescued (he was a triple rescue) him when he was (at least) 2 years old, 13 year's later and he's coming up for 15 (or there about's).

We know he has collie in him (obviously) but what else do you think is in him? The photo's are SO crap but it's very hard to keep him still when there are 3 other dogs parading around him!! :D

He's got really orange type eyes (see photo no: 3) and his tail is almost like a german Shepherd's tail (same shape etc).. his coat is soft and smooth but he also has the great big ear's... so any guesses welcome :-)

Here's the boy, he may not be the best looking chappy but we absolutely adore him in every way and or though he has a few faults temp wise, he's actually a darling! Can't believe he ended up being rescued 3 times.. (i believe one of them was because he was tied and left in a haulers yard..)

Me? I'd stop at Collie. He has a lovely hard eye, and he's prick eared and short coated.

That's it, he's a sheep dog, or he could be!! He looks very well for 15 years, another pointer to being as pure-bred as one could be. Looked after, they seem to live forever, almost!!

Alec - that's interesting! I thought most collies had long coats? Are you saying that pure bred dogs last longer? See i've always thought a heinz 57/cross breeds lasts longer and don't usually have as many issues/thing's go wrong with them.. but perhaps that's decided on whether it's show quality (thing's go wrong more often and they don't last forever?) or if they are working quality pure bred's (who may last longer? due to being the correct weight, exercised properly, fed properly and generally having a more *natural life style?)

Your dog looks to be a 'Smooth collie' and a very handsome lad at that!
There are several different types/breeds of Collie - I think you may have been thinking of the 'Border Collie' re coat length etc, and then there would also be the 'Rough Coated' (Lassie!) and the 'Bearded Collie' too:)
 
Thanks for your reply's.. all really interesting! That's cool, always wandered.. Yes i was thinking more of a border collie when Alec said collie.. i've googled and can completely see where your all coming from!! :)

I would say collie too, and you can get smooth Border Collies, quite a lot of people prefer them as working farm dogs as there is less coat to get in a mess.

This was my thought - definitely collie type mix. There's so much variety within the collie spectrum - working type dogs often look very different from the "show" types.

He's lovely, I like him.
 
I would also just say smooth-coated collie/working sheepdog type (as opposed to a Smooth Collie, which is a separate breed, a la Rough Collie, Bearded Collie, Border Collie).
 
Ok so Jasper is a collie.. no heinz 57 about him then :D:D

He's a beaut of a dog, cannot understand why no one wanted him.. i mean he was a handful when he came to us.. but it wasn't like we couldn't control him.. he is a sod for stealing though :rolleyes:

wouldn't change him for the world and at 15.. i say, if he can jump up onto a kitchen work top ... good on him (even if it is to steal our dinner..) haha! :D:D

Really? i've seen dogs similar to him, but have always been on the fine side (he's never been fat but he's a well built muscular dog) - i swear he'll live forever, he can still catch a rabbit!!! (run's seriously fast!)

He's not her biggest collie either! Another she has is absolutely huge (long haired though and much younger), and VERY muscular, will knock you over without even knowing you are there! She/ her family bred most of them so they are def. pure collies. You get more variety with working dogs, and her parents own a sheep farm in wales where most of the dogs came from :)
