Any ideas what is wrong please??????????

During the last 6 months my dog who is about 10 and a collie cross has been having periods of suffering from what looks like arthritis - she goes very hunched through her back, finds it hard to use her back end and looks very uncomfortable, this may just last overnight or 24 hours and after that she is back to her normal self - I would of course take her to the vet (she has had 2-3 episodes in the past 6 months) but she seems to recover just as I decide to take her there - just wondering has anyone experienced anything similar?

Our lab does something which sounds similar to what you have said but it doesn't last as long, we took him to the vets and his brain signals aren't getting down the nerves to his back end properly, it is due to age. The vet did a test where he bent his paw (like us clenching a fist) and seeing how long it took him to put it back to normal position. He is 10, will be 11 this year and also has joint problems.
 
She might have tweaked something in her lower back (as mine has done)

She might indeed have arthritis

She may have hip dysplasia

I would take her to the vets just to be on the safe side, all she may need is anti-inflammatories or a joint supplement.

You won't be troubling your vet, that is what they are there for, best to get her checked out to minimise any pain or discomfort.

It might also be to do with her bowels or bladder, is everything working normally back there?

Does she ever 'scuff' her back feet along concrete or carry her back paws curled up/unflexed?
 
Thanks for your replys , did think about her tweaking a muscle but dont think so as she has woken up with it, so to speak! Arthritis was something I was wondering about but doesnt seem to be weather related as arthritis often is. The problem re nerve pathways seems interesting Vikki.

Will wait till Monday now as I really dont like bothering vet unless I feel it is an emergency and would they be able to diagnose anything if she is showing no symptons? I am aware there is a blood test for arthritis so spose that can be ruled out.

They can do an x-ray to see if anything is amiss in the skeletal structure.

If she has tweaked something, it could have been anything that caused it, something imperceptible that you may not have noticed, especially given her age.

Let us know how you get on, hopefully it is something simple x
The scuffing/flexing question I asked relates to the nerve problem Vikki mentioned, it is one of the first signs.
 
Just an update Rags has arthritis - vet thinks hip gets slightly displaced which causes the acute symptoms

She is now on Meloxidyl
