10 week old colt. Turned out in a herd of mares and other colts on mixed pasture with woodland, brush and meadow grazing. All kinds of bushes and trees for him to scrape himself on, and an array of really nasty bugs that bite and lay eggs (we have had cats that have been stung and I have had to pull fingernail size larvae out of their necks)

I found this lump three days ago, it hasn't increased, or reduced, in size.

It is about the size of a walnut, firm, but not solid, feels almost cyst like.

No obvious head or puncture that I can find, although I am going to clip it tomorrow and have a good look, haven't been able to do so before hand for various reasons.

It doesn't appear to be painful, and he is not lame.

Any ideas, experiences, opinions?

Thankyou.

Agree II would try clipping the area, you find find an entry area then.

The only things that spring to mind is:

  • bite from one of the mares
  • fly eggs like warble flies (but they go to the back normally)
  • some sort of thorn embedded
  • caught it on a nail or similar a few days before and its now swollen up
  • kick - but then you would see more damage
  • seroma
  • hematoma
  • some sort of tumour
  • abscess that has not burst
  • blood clot maybe due to a bite
  • it could just be lymph trapped due to swelling of the surrounding tissues.

OK, so clipped now, not that there was much to take off.

What a star that colt is, I ran the clippers, cowardly mare trembled in a corner, Phoenix came over, thought he rather liked the buzzy thing and I did his shoulder with no halter on him...and his neck...and his head :) I can tick the 'has seen clippers' box now.

I can't see, or feel any scab or head on it at all :( Compresses next, see if that pulls anything up. Gah. Foals:mad:

Thankyou everyone for taking the time to reply.

I have finally found a way to describe the lump - like squeezing a tennis ball.

The vet was due today (I told him it was not an emergency) and sod's law, when I bought Phoenix in this morning the lump was almost completely gone, so the Vet and I decided that a visit wasn't necessary today afterall.Vet says that from the sound of it he would suspect an 'organised haematoma' usual follow up, observe and report back if it becomes a concern again.

Leviathon, yes Phoenix is a good boy, I am convinced that he is an old soul. Nothing fazes him at all, he positively enjoyed the clipping experience. :)

So many babies freak out at the first sign of clippers.

I am glad its going down. Lets hope it does not raise its ugly head again :)

Any chance we see the nicer part of Phoenix???(rest of him):)

Just looked at the third picture again .... my it was big
My mare had this on her tummy its going down very slowly , was very hard now its wobbly like a water balloon

I was going to say perhaps a Bot - I think thats prob what you have pulled out of the cats (bletch!!) - but by the sounds of things its all good in the hood now and baby has worried you for nothing!
My filly liked to do that to me too!
I agree with Leviathan, we need to see Phoenix with his smart (and brave) clipped bits!! x

Looks like a hematoma to me too - I had exactly the same looking lump on my leg after bashing it, same size, etc.

Be interesting to see what the vet says - mine went down after about a month.
