My friend has just brought a pony for her daughter. She viewed and tried it once then brought it without a vetting. She was an absolute angel! Since she has had him home he has started shaking his head badly and barging into others. She does not feel confident enough to put her 9 year old daughter on him at the moment. The previous owners never mentioned any of these habits. Has anyone had a similar experience and where do you suggest she goes from here?!.

Maybe its just a shock to a change of routine and handling or attention seeking?

My friends Paso Fino filly was so bulshy, she had lived out virtually all her life and basically would throw a tantrum when she didnt get her own way at her new home (was fine before she moved)...so it was just a case of laying some ground rules..

Did she buy the pony from a private individual or a dealer? If it was from a dealer, she will have some comeback legally, but if it was from a private seller - it is very much a case of caveat emptor - buyer beware, unless it can be proven that the pony displayed the same behaviour before sale. Just from your brief description, it sounds like the pony could be a headshaker - the seller is likely to say that the pony never did it before your friend bought it, or worse that your friend's care of the pony has actually caused it. Sorry to paint a grim picture - but your friend could end up with expensive investigations and no comeback on the seller.

Is it shaking his head whilst with a Bridle on? For bulshy horses; The best thing IMO is, when they come forwards, Stamp Your feet back at them.

My intial reaction is that it has been caused by stress of moving etc. But now I tend to agree that it is a headshaker. It came with a martingale and today she walked it up and down the road just in a bridle and it didn't do it. When she took it into the school and began to work it it just got more and more frustrated. Bearing in mind this pony was sold as a 'hunting pony and anyones ride'. A competant adult got on it and didn't feel safe.
