Any ideas what's happening to my GSD?

She's 11 years old now so getting on a bit, but recently she's started having what I can only liken to little asthma attacks.
It only happens twice, three times a week at the most and she will start to inhale and exhale really heavily and her sides and jowls really move with it. She will usually come to find one of us and we will rub her throat gently and give her a stroke and its over within a minute.
Is it just an age thing?

Sounds a bit like reverse sneezing, one or two of mine have done it, can't recall if it was as they got older or not. As you say a rub on the throat usually seems to sort it out.

It doesn't seem to bother her at all, as I said she'll come and get her throat rub then usually wag her tail have a snuffle in our faces then mooch off again! Only seems to be happening as she's gotten older.
Must be a(nother) Shepherd thing!! :o
