Any ideas why Moll has suddenly decided to start standing on herself?!

Went to Kelsall Hill ride on Saturday and when we got back, noticed Moll had cut the inside of the back of one of her back heels (!) (hard to explain, see pic - it's her right hind leg). It was only a tiny cut, so i cleaned it up and didnt think anything of it. Gave her sunday off, then rode her yesterday. Took her in the field to do some schooling. Walked around, then asked her to trot on. She did something odd, then went really lame. So i got off and looked at her leg, only to find she'd cut the same leg again in exactly the same place as before, but bigger this time.

Can only assume she's stood on her right hind with her left?!
So i cleaned it up again, and have been cleaning it several times a day since. She's not lame or anything, but i think it stings a bit and she holds it up when i'm cleaning it.

What i cant understand is why she would suddenly do this? Twice on the run in exactly the same place. We've had her for 5 and a half years! I rode her today with over-reach boots on her back feet, but is that all i can do? Is she just being thick and not thinking where she's putting her feet?!

Anyone have any ideas?

Some how it doesn't look like a normal cut as the edges have hair on them. Our horse had mudfever in the winter and after this present rain he has had a sore come back. Could your horse be the same?
If its definately a cut sorry to talk rubbish, but we have put Equine America fungitrol on and it healed very quickly

I have no idea why she's only just started doing this but I'd certainly boot her up for the time being until I could find a reason. You have got to stop this self inflicted injury being caused. The cuts are nice & clean but if she does this in muddy conditions bacteria could get in. I think you're doing the right thing...hopefully someone else may be able to give you a possible reason.

Well she DID have mud fever when she went out on loan (hence the clipped-off feathers), but that's cleared up now. I can see what you mean though - i just cant think of what it could be / how she did it...and why?! Silly girl - just trying to skive off work probably!!

i agree with carthorse- i think it looks like mudfever. Archie had mudfever in the winter and his 'cut' that he had when he got it badly looked identical to that.

But what made it appear when i was riding? I cant find anything in her feathers. She was treated with FrontLine 18months ago, because we thought she had mites. That worked a treat. I havent noticed her scratching it or stamping this time round...but there is a horse in her field who does! Hmmmmmmm.........
I just dont get how it suddenly appeared like that then! I'm always checking their legs. And the first cut was cleaned just before the bigger cut appeared, so.......oh i'm all confused!

the movement probably made it open up. Archie has a small cut identical to that which can open up when ridden, his is also due to mudfever. It hasnt opened up for ages i might add tho.
