will start with a bit of history. toby was very ill last year and nearly lost his fight. it all started when i went to see see him and he was like a bag of bones, queue toby being brought home the next day.

anyway got the weight on him for him to the go down hill and have swollen sheath be dangerously anemic and display signs of being in pain and colic like symptoms. he ended up in vet hospital and had colitis caused by worm damage. vets reconded he hadn't been wormed for the 2 years he had been on loan. We eventually got him better although he was left with some intestine damage. while he was in vet hospital the stress of it and lack of appetite caused him to get grade 4 gastric ulcers. last scope he had he had completely healed.

ok so over the summer and beginning of winter he has been great.

the problem is he stopped eating on Thursday and became unsettled cue vet out and did some blood tests and full examination bloods were o not 100% but quite good for him. he had gut sounds etc. the vet said due to everything else it might be ulcers but may not be we are all a bit stumped.

the other worry is the cost as up until Thursdays illness this illness has cost me £11,500. He will get the treatment he needs.

So my question is do you have any ideas what else it could be and is there any cheaper options to gastrogard. what else would you do for preventative messures.

sorry it was long and thank you for reading

My ISH was a real colicky boy - every 6 weeks at times and funny with his food. I stopped all grains (bagged mixes) and added in linseed meal to his feed.

We feed a simple unmolassed beet, linseed meal, mineral mix and sprinkle of seaweed - and good hay.

The linseed acts as a mucilage and has a reasonable quantity of al the really good oils. Always better to feed an oil as a solid seed than a liwuid I think. I use the Charnwood at £24 for 20Kgs.

Must be working - he has not had colic since we made that change. He is a lot happer too - much more relaxed and less stressy

We have added sprouted oats back into his diet - that is working really well. So it's not as simple as all grains I think.

I swear by Coligone rather than Gastroguard. The maintenance dose works out as pence per day and is effective almost immediately. I've seen stressy, miserable TBs with belly ache turned around in a few days. But there's obviously more going on in your boy's innards than just low grade ulcers. I've got no idea at all I'm afraid hun though it sounds as if the worm damage to his gut might be on the rise again :(
