Took Red for a hack yesterday about 2 hours long.

He coughed twice 2 coughs each which sounded like dry coughs. He also breathed heavily twice which sounded a little crackly. He also snorted out a bit of snot (sorry to be gross!)

He seems bright in himself, is eating like its going out of fashion.

He was very lazy yesterday, but no more than usual i dont think, but its hard to tell but he is generally a lazy horse.

His ears were pricked and he still had the energy to spook at things.

What do you think guys, do you think he has picked up a bug.

I must admit it has been rugs on rugs off at the moment and i dont think its doing him any good. He is up to date on jabs and has had summer worming but no panacur guard or anything i would call a big worm for everything.

I would appreciate your feelings on this. I gave him some koff exe by naff yesterday to see if that made a difference. He isnt coughing constantly or breathing heavily constantly though its only sparadic and when ridden (as far as i can tell without camping out in his field!)

Please does anyone have any ideas? I have some ventapulmin at home but wanted your opinions first then if you guys think necessary i will call the vet but i would like your opinions first.

Am i worrying unduly?

June - oh quite a while now then.

I was just thinking that it could be the usual 'new kid on the block' kind of thing. A bit like when kids go to school for the first time. But you've had him for too long now really for that.

I expect it's nothing, and personally would be inclined to keep a watching brief rather than self medicate. I would also rest him, with as much fresh air as possible, and ensure that he doesn't get a soaking.

Hopefully it will be nothing and it will clear up of its own accord - but if not then maybe get your vet to have a look if your still worried in a week or so.

Anyway what i was saying is i would soak his hay for a few days and just keep and eye on him. It will probably clear up by itself but if it gets worse or he goes off his food then i would call a vet incase its a bacterial infections or something.

I'm sure its nothing to worry about though.

Also my friends horse used to be on dry hay, then one day he started couging and snotting, she soaked his hay and he was fine. If he has even 1 dry wedge now he starts snotting really badly.

He is out at the moment 24/7 so pleanty of fresh air. He is rugged at night in a lw and during the day if its cold or rainy.

He did get soaked through a couple of nights ago so i was thinking it could be a bit of a chill.

Crikey i do panic about these things!!

I have a thicker rug if necessary with just a little filling but im not sure if he needs it yet!

I was thinking give him a week or so and see what happens!

He is out with another 3 horses and none of them are showing the symptoms so im loathed to think its something serious!

Why didnt i qualify to be a vet!?!?!?!

Strange, i know these things can come on at any time!! He has been on dry hay all year so far, the YO puts a big round bale in the field so unless it rains i cant wet it or take him away from it.

I think it rained quite a bit last night so it should be a little soaked!

Maybe im panicing, will check on him again tonight and see what happens.

Are these types of things quite common?

Did he cough before or after work? ie, before he was warmed up or after he had done a bit. If they give a couple of coughs soon after pulling out it is generally nothing to worry about. However, if he coughed after a long trot or a bit of a canter I would get him scoped.

The hack was only walk and trot mostly walk. He did it part way through the hack, it wasnt like just clearing the throat when i first got him out.

Think i will monitor for a week then get the vet if necessary

Beacon is like this sometimes and I usually find it is a touch of RAO, I give him a week on ventipilmin and he is fine again. With him he gets a little lazy first, he eats normally etc just goes a little quiet when ridden. Then a few days or weeks later he has the odd cough and splutter. This is occassionally followed by a nasal discharger (but can take weeks to get to this stage) If I give ventipulmin before this stage then the cough come sooner and he recovers and finds his engergy again.
ps I know he is strange
