I was hoping/wonerding if anyone could help me, i have a retired pony who I love to bits but recently I have started to struggle with the cost of keeping two horses in livery(I also have a younger horse). She is such a nice natured wee thing who is easy to keep/handle, I really would love to be in a position to keep her for life but at the min it is not a possibility. Whatever happens will not be at her expense and if it comes to it I will sell my younger horse but realy dont want that to happen.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i could do with my ponio? Do good companion homes really exist? If so how do you find them? Is it worth getting in touch with horsey charities, would they be able to help?

I doubt the horse charities will be able to help right now - unfortunately they are swamped with with badly treated rescue cases.

I would try the word of mouth, signs in tack shops etc and see how you get on. I think there are probably a lot of people in your situation sadly - there seem to be a lot for sale and companion homes round here at the moment.

Good luck with it.

Livery in my part of the world is pretty pricey and where my two live is reasonably priced in comparison to other local yards, still works out very expensive in winter though. Have been keeping my eyes open for somewhere cheaper. I really dont think I can get through another winter with the two so am really going to make effort to find ponio nice companion type home this summer.

Nope - because you horse is not a charity case.

Good companion homes are out there - but if I were looking for one, I would probably only do it through word of mouth as it were.

Unless you neglect her (which you obviously dont), then a charity is not really the way forward

They are there for the needy horses, not for the needy owner

Is she rideable at all, and if so, could you not get a little sharer so that you can keep your eye on her??

She could be ridden but it would have to be very light work with a very light rider, ie tiny person in mostly walk and tiny bit of trot. In my expience most kids want to canter loads and jump and she would not be up to that.

I am in west coast of Scotland, if you want any more info pm me, I would be willing to move her a reasonable distance for the right home.

Thanks folks.

She might be ideal for a (small) mum wanting to accompany little kids out on the leadrein. Worth trying at your local pony club?
