We currently have a rather poorly 27 year old newfie x at our yard and we are all a bit stumped. She came in last night as normal - ate all her hard feed, hay and about 3/4 tubtrug of water. A livery found her at about 8.30am dripping sweat, rolling and v wobbly on her legs. Vet was called - thought it was probably colic so treated with bute and buscopan(sp?) also discovered a heart murmur (pony came to us as a rescue so was never vetted and has never had any need other than routine to see the vet in 15 years) pony calmed down but stayed down flat out in stable until about 3pm when the rolling and sweating up started again. Vet out again treated again with buscopan and finadine (sp?) Gums/eyes still a good pink colour, good gut sounds but still in pain - keeps stretching out front legs . Vet did rectal and can feel some poo making its way through but would expect more than there is . No signs of a twist or gaseous colic . Pony has until 10pm to make an imrpovement otherwise she will be pts as she is too old to got hrough surgery. Pony is also believed to have cushings - has tested borderline three times but shows classic symptoms of long coat and high water intake. Any ideas - colic, cushings related or heart related ???

Poor girl sounds like she is in a lot of pain.

Could be an impaction further in than the vet can feel. We had a horse at our yard break through the painkillers after a few hours and although the vet could not feel an impaction at the time, the following day the horse passed some very hard dry poops (sign of impaction). Vet confirmed that there is only so much they can feel on a rectal.

Has the vet tubed her and tested to see if there is any reflux? If the mare has managed to eat anything and there is a high up impaction, then there could be undigested food matter sitting in the stomach that would come out of the tube.

I really hope she improves this evening.
