My three year old has mud fever on his two back legs just on his heals. I think it is due to the fact that there is a stream running through his field which is the source of drinking water and he loves sloshing around in it. He is turned away so he is living out, i will have the use of a stable from November till June which will help. I have the equilibrium chaps but i dont think they will work so is there anything that is actually waterproof? I have been treating the mud fever and it is starting to clear up but nothing seems to stay on in the stream, i have used fuciden which has now run out and i'm trying to get more, sudo cream, udder cream, protection plus. Sorry for long post but any ideas much appreciated!
 
Have you tried vaseline?? Or pig oil??

Could you fence off the access to the stream and the mud surrounding it, and provide an alternative source of water to drink?? If he is getting mud fever now, I dread to think what it will be like if the whole field is muddy in winter!!!
 
my horse has gotten it on her front legs and its clearing up and i massage baby oil into her skin below her fetlocks as this is usually where she gets it. Its really good as it softens the skin and its less likely the split. Also helps repel water.
 
Thanks for all your comments, I cant really fence it off as he is out with others, he is very prone to it but i did manage to keep it at bay last year when he was in overnight, I did have one idea but dont know if its a good one would event grease work, obviously only if the mud fever was all cleared up, but i'm guessing event grease is pretty waterproof?
