My horse is on loan to a wonderful home and has been for 2 years with no issues and we are both a bit stumped with what's wrong with her, if anyone has any similar experiences it would be great to hear about them thank you! Vets and physio are involved, but she is only insured for external injuries due to exclusions.

Horse is 8 year old mare, mother daughter share, both mum and daughter very lightweight, quiet riders. She's usually ridden around 5 days a week, mosty hacking and 1x schooling per week. With a bit of jumping (mostly in summer). She does have hock arthritis managed with arthamed and steroids. She gets plenty of turnout, muzzled in summer.

A couple of weeks ago, the daughter started a schooling session, first 10 mins absolutely fine. She's a very ridable and quiet horse. Then 10 mins in she started cow kicking, striking out, wouldn't go forward when asked to trot. Rider got off, they've checked her over, can't find anything. Vet/physio can't find anything either so suggested medicating hocks, which has been done plus normal rehabilitation for that and no change. She's also going mental on the lunge, bucking and leaping which is out of character. She's fine out hacking, forward happy to trot. We are going to trial some gastroguard in case of ulcers. But any other suggestions of similar symptoms and what your horse had? The very quick onset is so odd so I am thinking maybe a bladder infection or ovaries bothering her? She's never done this before and I had her 3 years then the loan home 2. We're all sure it's pain/discomfort not behavioral as horses don't just decide to change their behaviour so suddenly.

Has the vet not considered scoping for ulcers? That would be one of my first thoughts, the acid splashes caused by exercise could be causing pain and kicking out is a classing sign.

Could also be ovaries causing pain but that could be a cause of ulcers too…or pain somewhere is causing ulcers. I would ask the vet to scope and scan the ovaries to be sure. Good luck

Agree about it possibly being ovarian cyst. Mare at livery yard I was at turned from a sweetheart into a complete cow almost overnight.

Full workup was done - luckily under insurance - and then she was operated on for the ovaries and afterwards returned back to being a lovely horse.

The cost of scoping for ulcers is significantly cheaper than a proper course of gastroguard- that would be my first place to look
