I'm trying a few things out with my new boy - he is a bit bargy, few manners, hates being tied up to be groomed.

Have done some pressure / release work with him - coming towards me (no problems now), backing up perfectly too now, but ask him to move over by applying pressure and he gets so upset and moves right back at me - infact turns his bum to me.

Any advice?

He is perfect under saddle and a pleasure to ride - just a little bit rude on the ground.

horses press into pressure so your boy is probly just doing that and getting upset because he can't figure out how to release it, if you use the bottom of your palm and put pressure on the bit near the hindquarters where the hair goes in a whirl (sorry dont know name for it) and at the same time tilt his head slightly towards you, he should step over, then lots of praise, pair this with a word such as over, and he will learn the voice command to

This above...
start light and increase pressure, reward the smallest try, even just a shift in weight, by instantly releasing the pressure.

Give him a moment and then try again.

The key is having the nose tipped to you, because you can prevent him stepping into you, or kicking out.
