I own a small beautiful private livery at home, I usually do DIY or Assisted livery but a very nice lady has approached me asking if I could take her show jumper on grass keep while she is out of the country for 8 wks. She will then return for a couple of long weekends then go again for 6 - 8 wks on and off for a year or so due to her work. I will have to check him daily, do his water, give him 1 meal per day (she will supply the feed) & change rugs along with the climate but he will live out 24/7 how much do you think I should charge per week for this. My OH is a Vet so she has the security of him getting good care, she also informs me he is a bit grumpy to handle - this is not really an issue for me. Has anyone else got a similar set up with their liveries or livery yard.

Will you need t put out some hay in winter?
Do you have ample gazing if it wet weather?
Handle for farrier and bring in and worm?

It sounds similar to 'retirement' grass livery, fo which prices seem to be £35- £40 a week.

Plus you'll soon need fly-spray or a fly mask for the horse and as she's away for such long periods a written agreement that you will purchase stuff such as fly spray as needed and bill her for it in arrears (obviously livery money in advance).
Plus get farrier to send bill directly to her for the horse (is it having it's shoes removed whilst turned away?)

My livery yard charges £10 pw for grass livery and thats it.If you were feeding and checking I'd say between £20-25 pw.

Thanks for your help, I was thinking around £25 per week so not far out, I have plenty of grazing 20 acres for 6 horses, He is barefoot so only needs trimming, I thought I would bill her for anything out of the norm ie holding for farrier, fly sprays, wormers etc on top of the weekly livery fee.

I agree with what you are thinking about charging & then billing on top for farrier holding, wormers etc. Get everything down in writing so both of you are aware of who is responsible for what. You also need the owners permission to call a vet if needed & that the owner will be responsible for call out fee & any treatment given. You will also need arrangements made for any insurance claims for injuries/illness to be made by you on owners behalf.

There's quite alot to think about & legislate for when the owner is absent.

Ok thanks for your advice, I do have this covered in my contracts but I will make sure her insurance co knows that I am looking after the horse in her absence - that, I didn't think of! My husband is her Vet so not quite so worrying about paying for treatment etc
