hi can any one tell me any good liveries that would take on a cob colt bout 11-12 months old i need find one asap please can anyone help me thanks steph
i am getting one this week and need a livery that will take colts in one i was speaking to went to have a look around at said it wouldnt be a problem but when i got back home she turn round and told me i couldnt
i dont know of any yards that will take colts, i am nearer chelmsford and everyone i know who has bought a colt has had to have it gelded before they move to a yard they want to be at
I'm in Devon so no good to you; but TBH I wouldn't take on a youngster here at my yard unless I was very sure that the owner intended to geld it. This isn't just me being picky, its for everyone's benefit especially as there are mares around.
I've had youngsters here in the past (2 yo's) and it depends a lot on the owner as well as the animal(s). Some owners are very "hands on" and get on with halter work/groundwork at the very earliest opportunity, and the horse is therefore a very different prospect to something that's just turned out and if it does then need handling for vet/farrier etc, is a totally different situation and can be a total nightmare.
If a YO is asked to take on a youngster and then refuses, this is no doubt one good reason why; they've probably had a bad experience. Sorry but that's the way it is, once bitten, twice shy.
I hate to say and I'l pobably get shot down for it but you should possiby have already arranged the yard before the horse especlly with a colt.
But thats a bit irrelevnt now so I'd arrange for it to be gelded asap preferably before it arrives then you wont have the issue of finding a yard to take a colt.
Do you need to keep him entire? How is he bred and what do you want to do with him?
I am starting to breed a few to keep or sell depending on how the next few years go. My mare is well bred and I put her to a very good stallion. If she has a colt I will keep it entire and get it graded, I would only geld it if it wasnt stallion worthy.
If he is a normal riding horse, not competing to a decent level and more of a pet I would get him gelded now
I bought a yearling a few years ago and although my livery yard allowed me on i wasn't allowed to turn out until i had him gelded which i did a week later anyway, but i don't know if there are many yards that will allow a colt unless you were to geld him as soon as you got him.
Might be best seeing if there are any studs near you that might take a livery if your planning on keeping entire or renting your own bit of land?
Some do but its usually as a short term measure till they can be gelded & turnout can be limited dependent on colt & yard/ other horses. Really you should have found out before buying it. Now its done, either get it cut at current yard & most places will take it. Or post a thread asking for livery yards with your area in the thread title. And worth posting in breeding for yards that do youngstock livery.
