Anybody got any new ideas on what to put on post to deter wind sucking? We are about to replace a fence but unfortunately there is a wind sucker in that gang........does anyone have any bright new suggestions on what to paint onto the posts?
There are plenty of trees in the field for him to get his fix but don't want him to wreck the new fence!
Not going to use a collar.

Single electric wire on off-sets? That would be a cheap permanent solution. Depending on your ground, off-sets can be quite far apart and don't cost a fortune. The wire is cheap enough. The biggest expense would be the energiser, but maybe you don't have a lecky connection available?

unfortunately the field is too far away from the mains, any idea of home made concoctions or a product that works!?

A lady I know who is in her 80s and has bred horses all her life paints anything she doesn't want chewing with old "sump oil" which I think is out of a tractor or other heavy vehicle. It looks and smells disgusting but it seems to do the job. No idea if it's harmful or hazardous though - but it seems to work.

As above & use a leisure battery, you don't have to have mains power to send a real jolt down to tape/rope/wire. There are probably more battery powered electric fences in the UK than mains powered ones.

I've used mixed creosote & sump oil, tho its not had a brilliant deterrent effect - usually deters for a few weeks only. Does make the wood look nice & dark tho :)

Best solution I've found is electric fence set in behind P&R fence or as said above - wire on the top, run from 12 volt battery & energiser.

In the spirit of the pedantic thread... if your horse grabs onto something to winduck, it's actually a crib biter. ;) :)

I agree with the strand of electic tape above the top rail. I have this set up for my cribber. It's run with an energiser and battery and I have found that I don't need to keep it electrified all the time, so charging up the battery isn't a problem. :)

I have also made a cribbing station by putting a sacrificial strip of wood on top of the gate, so that she has somewhere to crib. This strip of wood can then be replaced once she's worked her way through it.

For me the answer has always been a strand of electric tape/wire. You could try a solar powered energiser, or a standard battery one.

its a very large field! we are replacing the posts on both sides about 150 metres long so don't think the electric fencing will be workable as its close to a river as well, just a pain this new horse we have retired with us is going to ruin the posts, want to find something to paint on the tops of the posts, he has plenty of trees to do it on! May try the sump oil.

My battery energiser, depending on undergrowth, will run up to 18km of electric fence, 150 mtrs is nothing. If you have 2 separate lengths of fencing then you could link them logether with 'insulated lead out cable' that you would bury. It's not very expensive & would run the charge between the 2 lengths of fencing easily.

I have 2 x hotline 250's (1 old, one quite new) and between them they can do the perimeter fencing of 4.5 acres - and a couple or more of division fences at same time. (Tiny Fuzzy needs lots of tape at Tiny heights to keep her in the right area at the right time ;)
A good leisure battery lasts 15 - 21 days, a smaller USED car battery lasts 4 - 8 days.
