hi was just wondering how much the running costs of a moped would be? I currently have a 3.2 mitsubishi gas guzzler and thinking about getting a moped to do the stable run cuz of fuel costs. Dont want to get rid of the car as its great for towing but a bit too thirsty for running round town.

Your opinions please

thanks

When I had mine the CBT (compulsory basic training) was around £175 I think (guessing as I haven't done it for years but everyone has to do it now as far as I know)
Tax £15 a year, can't remember insurance but it wasn't much and petrol wasn't much either.

I had mine whilst doing my A-levels and only had a part time job.

I did run a scooter for a couple of years when I wanted to keep my horsebox, it was very cheap to run but took some self motivation especially in bad weather!

Tax was £15 for the year, insurance about £90 with NFU, don't think I ever got as far as servicing and fuel was a fiver a week!

Advice would be don't buy a cheap import, stick with a known make such as Suzuki, Peugeot, Honda etc (the old C90 looks naff but runs forever BTW) and buy good kit ie proper gloves, jacket and trousers. Please, please also wear hi vis, have scraped far too many (dead) motorcyclists off the deck for comfort.

Honest answer is, it depends on the moped. If you are lucky you may be able to pick up a second hand two stroke like a Honda C90 which will do well over 100 miles to the gallon, but they don't make two strokes any more (sadly) so may be tricky. Two strokes burn oil as well as petrol and they are supposedly high in emissions (but don't actually emit much as they don't use much fuel). They are very cheap to service and you can probably do it yourself. Tax is very low and you should be able to get cheap insurance.
If you go for a four stroke you will spend more on servicing and fuel.

Bear in mind though that these things only do about 30mph and will not get you anywhere that you could not go on a bicycle for a lot less money! Personally I would go and do your CBT (about £100 and you renew it every two years) and get a 125cc bike which will still be reasonably cheap to insure (even on L plates) and have sensible fuel economy (my old Yamaha could do 100 miles to the gallon) as well as doing 60-70mph which is enough to get you out of trouble.

Another expense to factor in is a decent helmet (Shoei or Arai are best) which will cost you north of £250 and you will want decent gloves and boots at the very least. On a moped you will probably not need leathers as the speed is so low but on anything bigger you will need these too.

Hope this helps...

I have a 50cc!

Saves me a FORTUNE in fuel getting to work and back! I have the older licence which means I can ride it without the CBT and L plates...

Best thing I ever got, the Mitzi L200 is a thirsty beast.......

I do...

Cost me £99 for my CBT, £550 for a brand new moped (http://www.scooter.co.uk) and £15 a month insurance and £15 a year tax.
Fuel tank takes £3.95 to fill, and will last me 3 days, of driving 7 miles to work and 7 miles back, and then a further 3.5 miles to yard and 3.5 miles back home.

Love my little moped! I did have a kymco filly, (name sold it for me) and it got stolen so get a good lock!

On a moped you will probably not need leathers as the speed is so low but on anything bigger you will need these too.

Nope - you WILL need protective gear too.
30 mph - or even 20mph - is faster than you will come off your horse/pony on the road - you are also more likely to ricochet of a kerb etc - abrasion burns are NOT nice.

We have a lot of students who regularly come off at the top of our road & about 50% are carted off to hospital with severe lacerations or worse - and this is a 20mph patch (can't go faster there due to bend, I've tried!). its worse in the summer when they ride with helmets & gloves - but in t-shirts & shorts!

Please, if going to get a moped, then do get the right gear as it may not be your fault if you come off, but you will (usually) come off worse.

thanks for all your advise, i def think it will be cheaper to run a moped instead of the car everyday to the stables then. Ill prob still use the car in rain just cuz i can lol its just the start up costs with buying a moped and getting the cbt that worries me. i will be buying all safety wear with out question and im a great believer of " be safe be seen" so will b wearing the hi-VIZ too :) x

I used to have a little 50cc scooter and OH currently rides a 250cc one. Wouldn't be without them! I had mine while I went to uni in London - it took about 2 hours on public transport and 25 mins on the bike! No contest! I was a bit apprehensive about bad weather, but in the year I had that one I got wet twice!

One thing we would say is essential is the correct safety gear. We have a friend who was knocked off his bike and would have been dead without the gear. And Hi Viz - I have sent for the 'polite' tabbard for riding and OH says he's going to get one for the bike! ;)

No doubt it is very economical too. I would think it would be absolutely ideal for yard runs! You can get a nice little top box on the back to take your clobber and a flask of tea if you need! :D

Yes, and I LOVE it! Mine is lush! its a hot metallic pink 125cc. It costs me £15 a year in tax, £80 a year in insurance and does about 80mpg! I also never EVER sit in a traffic jam! Its not working out soo well right now in the snow, but the rest of the time its bloody fabulous!

The down sides are they get nicked on a regular basis :( either garage it, or chain it up with an Almax chain to something solid and put a disc lock and alarm on it. And be aware that every other driver on the road is out to get you! I dont have a car at the minute, which is hideously bad timing, but my plan for next year is a 4x4 for bad weather and the bike the rest of the time.

Its not great in driving rain etc, but when your tootling past massive traffic jams knowing its costing you pennies its an awesome feeling! And nothing beats flying along a smooth piece of road feeling like your flying!!

As for the start up costs mine cost me £370 inc delivery from 300 miles away. It was second hand and is a Chinese bike which is frowned upon but its been uber reliable. Go for a 4 stroke second hand and you'll be fine :) PM me if you need advice :)

i drive a 50cc piaggio ape its a 3 wheeled pick up truck but classed as a moped for tax etc, it runs at about 100 to the gallon, is two stroke £15 a year tax and cheap to insure with mce
and the bonus is you dont need a helmet or leathers as you sit in the cab so dont get wet, can carry the dogs, collect the shopping and shaings bales, feed etc and you can do your cbt in it as well
