Hi,

I was wondering is any one had, had their horse manipulated under sedation, and if so, whether it worked for them?

Good or bad comments would be very much appreciated!

Yes some years ago with a McTimoney lady and we had excellent results - horse was completly different afterwards!

I had one treated very succesfully under general anaesthetic and another we sedated for several sessions as he would resist because he was so uncomfortable. He took nearly a year to finally sort out.
It is far easier for the chiro to work when the horse is relaxed.

Jenny Hadland does it a lot, I'm not so sure about it all really. There's a fine line between a horse who is not keen on being manipulated to one being forced to do stuff that is totally unnatural. It seemed to work for those that had it done though.

From an osteopathic perspective, I would see it that it would be rarely better for a horse to be sedated for treatment than un-sedated. The body often has guarding patterns around pain/dyfunction for a reason and it is possible that by removing that guarding through sedation you could make a situation much worse. Tissue feedback is highly important in the treatment process, and without radiographs/imaging, sedation prior to treatment is quite risky due to the fact the body could no longer give signals of impending dangerous force. In my experience the horses who are extremely tender benefit more from taking a layer-upon-layer approach than from trying to get to the 'root' of the problem in the very first visit. Less resistance from the horse and less risk of major soreness which can create more guarding.
