Just wondering if anyone else put hay out. Everything was frozen solid this morning so i put some out. We still have quite a bit of godd grass left though.

Also is it right that eating frozen grass is no good for horses?

yes, put lots out, same as every other morning! frosty grass has higher fructan levels, bad for laminitics.
there's no such thing as good grass in winter, i'm afraid. there may be lots of it, in which case, lucky you, but it's got naff-all goodness in it as far as the horses are concerned!

Yes, just a slice each though to keep them going until the grass thaws out - they are both looking a bit too well at the mo due to changing to haylage

and there is loads of grass to keep them occupied

I give him a hay bag every day purely because I'm worried about him losing weight and although we have plenty of grass he's a lazy grazer and some times just can't be bothered! At least if he has hay out there, its in one place and he doesn't even have to bend down!!!!!

LOL - I posted about this in NL a couple of days ago! I am now such a HHO sheep that I am dutifully putting hay out for my boy again every morning

Grass is crappy this time of year even if theres lots of it I believe. Mine are still grazing but they get hay anyway. However, our hay is very changable due to the crappy summer! One bale can be horrid and another lovely! So somedays they eat it, others they dont.

Mine is getting a slice of large bale hayledge in his field everyday now, and is still eating half a large slice at night with 3 sections of Hay!!

There is nothing in the grass now

After saying that I don't put hay out in that other post, I actually did put some out this morning! The grass has been frozen solid for days now. They walked right past it, so if they've not eaten by the time I go up later then I won't be putting it out again.

I put another 2 slices out today..... its sitting neatly with yesterdays 2 slices and the two from the day before...... hope he gets hungry soon!!! Not puttin any more out till its gone now..... he obviously doesnt need to be fed, magic horse

Mine have been having hay since October!!!! already gone through 6 round bales [currently awaiting delivery of more this weekend] but in the mean time, two bales have gone out morning and night and its all gone!!!!
There is no goodness in the grass now.....

Why is it then if there is no goodness in the grass, that merlin prefers to eat that than the hay I lovingly put out each day???

Does it just taste better even if there is no nutrition and fills his tum anyway!!

The hay I have been putting out is this years and smells beautiful... made on the farm where he is kept...so know that it is lovely

Mine have been on twice a day hay for a month now. They're on a bale a day approx. Soaked - very annoying and cold on the ole fingers!

Got pretty much no grass where they are now, so the hay and two feeds a day each.
